Is it a sin to watch movies that swear?

I think Ephesians 4:29 would be relevant.


29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.


What constitutes unwholesome? Well, we see that it definately would be the opposite of "what is helpful for building others up according to their needs", but could it be more than that? I think some words that are more vulgar (sexual in nature, f---,c---, etc) should be avoided as they are words unlike s---, and d---. Although, I do think this is largely arbitrary. Language is rather subjective, and is entirely upon those who hold it in common. Some things appropriate here in America, would not be elsewhere. Visa versa as well. Kind of a difficult balance I would say. I think we should be careful about people's sensibilities though. I try to not eat pork around Muslims, because I know it would offend them. I'm not going to follow every rule though.

The general rule I apply is "What is appropriate for this situation or in this company?" Sure I'm not going to run out in public and shout or drop cuss words like crazy. But if I'm say in a public park and talking at normal volume with friends I'll speak freely. The point I was trying to drive home is that people condemn the use of these words as sin because of inherited cultural sensibilities and not any well grounded scriptural reason.

In fact the occasions when it's acceptable to use cuss words have increased dramatically in recent years. Cuss words aren't taboo among my generation or really my parents generation; so the only hold-outs in that regard are my grand parents generation. It's probably harder for me to find an every day situation where cuss words would offend than it is to find an occasion when they wouldn't.
 
II Corinthians 6:17 " Wherefore come out from among them, and be you separate, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you."
