In terms of lyric repetition, mood, and overall feel, do most Christian songs sound really lame to anyone else? Or am I just thinking of church music...

It depends. I'm actually one of the Christians that can't stand Christian music that is full of depressing lyrics and so self-centered.

I love worship songs that talk about what Jesus has done and what we have overcomed through Him. Enough with the sad stuff. Let's praise the One who conquered sin and death.

look up Rich Mullins, he's an AMAZING poet. Look up all of his albums, really amazing soul.
He was very honest, which makes it not.. "boring"
There was also made a movie about his life you should watch called Raggamuffin

I take less issue to the lyrics than I do to the music. Musically speaking, a lot of it is pretty one dimensional. There's probably a lot of good Christian music we're missing, to be fair.

For me they are. Not that the messages aren't great, but they are repetitive. So, yeah, I don't listen to christian music often. I usually only listen to music for entertainment anyway or during workouts etc. Just comes down to personal taste I guess.

Actually, use Bruce's comment as my own as well haha.

because it's typically how I feel since graduating Bible college. There is a lot of repetition in it and it causes me to be more annoyed than anything else.

I guess that depends. Some christian songs will be boring, and others won't. I listen at a lot of Owl City (he's got christian songs, and just normal songs) Hillsong, Adam Cappa and sometimes Oh Sleeper (from the christian bands) They're kinda good, and not that boring.

there's two sides to this:

(1) musically
i can say the same thing about popular radio.

i think the thing is, you've not found the right musicians.

generally, if you're only hearing what's on the radio, or on a auto-generated pandora list or anything similar - what you're hearing is music that's been chosen (and often specifically written) to appeal to a very large audience of people, all with different individual tastes.
so what you mostly get is very watered-down, samey, repetitive and bland stuff. it's like mild salsa from taco bell, that's kind of tasteless because they need it to not burn the mouths of 8 million people who all have various degrees of salsa tolerance. it doesn't mean that "all salsa" tastes like this or that more spicy, interesting, complex salsa doesn't exist - or that more complex, interesting and varied gospel music doesn't exist.
it means you're eating salsa (or hearing music) designed for the lowest common denominator. you gotta look elsewhere for the "good stuff"

(2) content
a big part of the appeal - and for some people virtually all of the appeal - of Christian music is the spiritual content & message of the songs. if you're not engaging with it, part of the reason might be your own spiritual state of growth and your own relationship with Christ. like shineyourlight said -- she loves songs that are worshiping Jesus, & she didn't mention music at all. if you're not praising God in your heart, you're more than likely not going to appreciate these kinds of songs. if they're talking about issues and emotions and ideas that you don't identify with or get excited about, you're probably going to find them repetitive & lame, like you said.

this also goes back to what i said about the actual music - when you're hearing these things on the radio, or other places where what you're getting is the most "popular" songs - a lot of the time, this is also "dumbed down" in a way to appeal to the most people that it possibly can.
there may or may not be something wrong with that - there are good things to say about simplicity, and just "because it's popular" is not a good reason all by itself that anything is wrong. you'd have to look on a case-by-case basis at songs to talk about that, but there would be trends.
& it's not necessarily anything wrong with you if you don't identify & relate to a lot of what you're hearing - everyone gains understanding at different rates, everyone has individual quirks that make some things appeal more to them than others, we all come to Christ out of different backgrounds with our own sort of "language" of musical understanding, and our walk with Christ proceeds at different rates - so please don't take it like i'm saying there's a problem with your soul if you don't like worship music or any other kind of gospel songs.

all in all, i think probably you just haven't heard the right songs yet.
i've been into Christian music for over 20 years, and there's a lot that seems kind of lame to me now that didn't use to, and a lot that used to seem lame that sure doesn't anymore.just like with secular music, i had to dig to find most of the real gems, but that doesn't mean some of the things that are really popular aren't brilliant too!

go digging through this section of the forum. there are hundreds of threads going back several years full of gospel songs that have touched people, in all kinds of styles. i'm sure there is something in here to bless you :)

personally 99% of what gets played on the radio(aka K-love) these days is junk. Is over simplified pop-worship anthems and I dont blame you for being tired/sick of it. I would recommend diving into google and searching christian "whatever your favorite genre is" to find some better alternatives.

yea, much of it is kinda boring, and like many said, repetitive.
Then again, most music nowdays seem to be

I don't know what genres you like, but have a look at these. The examples below are different versions of "classic" songs:

Down To Da River : T-Bone, Lil Zane, and Montell
Amazing Grace : Petra
Jesus kom til jorden for å dø (Jesus came to earth to die) : Extol

Once I got past the stereotypical silliness, that was actually pretty good.
