Ok so, if you haven't noticed, I caught some flak in a poll I posted about whether a woman prefers a man who is more of a tough guy personality or more of a playful, funny-guy guy personality.

Do you think that by preferring one type of personality to another in a mate is stereotyping? If you do, then isn't preferring someone who is a virgin or someone who has a good credit history also stereotyping?

Please vote and tell me your thoughts on this. Thank you for all replies, good and bad.

I imagine we all stereotype from time to time. I'm an admitted Type A. Wish I wasn't. :)

From the responses, most of us knew what you were trying to say before.:) Don't let the gnat gagging/camel swallowers dump on you.

Haha I knew I could guess what sparked this thread before I read it lol

No it's not stereotyping, some people are just easily offended so don't take what happened to heart.

Prefering a certain personality or attribute is not stereotyping, stereotyping is when you assign attributes to a group.
Such as masculinity (manliness) meaning muscular, deep voice, hard labourer, aggressive. or Somalians are pirate-ish, or Elderly women are connisseurs of puddings and tea.

The concept of masculinity and femininity is a stereotype, sometimes empirically justified on average in genetics (taller, muscular, deep voice) and others are socially constructed (tradition of being labourers, protectors and earners -not child rearing, practical not artistic, straight forward as opposed to talkative socialites)... should this mean its offensive to call those manly or womanly features?

Personally I don't care if someone gets offended on this issue. Masculinity and femininity is the only shorthand we have for 'features prevalent of women and man today', regardless of whether the source is the spectrum through genetics or social contructs which are liable for change.

Taking offense here is about challenging the social construct of roles that women and men have traditionally played, not admitting the present truth of the situation, in favour of how things ought to be.

Being a librarian is not a femanine job just as much as being a labourer is a mans, spectrums of both sexes will have the affinities and capabilities for said industries.

Lol I gave you flak for your own good.

I was annoyed that you put 'tough' in the box called masculine and 'playful' in the box called feminine. Because neither of them can be used in isolation to define one sex!

Tough and playful are neither feminine or masculine characteristics but HUMAN characteristics.
Lol and sexuality is not a personality type its a choice, otherwise the whole concept of the 'gay gene' would be correct.

Second point, in dating God tells us to uphold his standards for a partner. I think God takes our interests and applies them but so long as we're open to how he interprets it. What we want is nothing compared to what God wants us to have. Therefore, in instructions in seeking a partner, in the bible we see points like

Loves Jesus
Is a good steward
Submits to biblical authority
Teaches and is teachable
Respects elders as parents and peers as siblings etc

NOT

Has muscles
Likes to play with their hair
Has lots of sperm
Must understand knock knock jokes...

Masculine and Feminine personality traits is a 100% valid psychological concept that has been around for years and years. I didn't just make it up.

Here is an article actually published by the University of Texas Department of Psychology that talks about it...

Masculine Instrumentality and Feminine Expressiveness: Their Relationships with Sex Role Attitudes and Behaviors

Has lots of sperm

Most would never put it that way, but I do pray that both me and my spouse are fertile or able to procreate and that there are no problems with our reproductive systems.

masculine is characteristics that men posses. Men posses all characteristics that women do, therefore there is no such thing as masculine and feminine.

I put "other" because I like a mix of things. I want my guy to be strong yet sensitive. He may be a tough guy, but when he looks at me I want him to be a big teddy bear. I love to laugh, and I like a side of geek to go with it.

I never really understood that whole "Type A" personality stuff. I tend view people by their specific characteristics or actions. I do whoever think there are people who act similar so just becuase I dont classify them "A, B, C" or whatever doesnt mean I dont think it may have some truth to it.

If we can accept "love languages" or how we prefer someone to show us they love us, then why can't we accept that there may be different "Types" of people.

Lol do you think God gives a rats bum about psychological theories? I get my standard of masculine and feminine exaples from the bible not from a qualitative paper on opinions becomming 'fact' just because its now a norm in western society which is case you havent noticed is pretty screwed up. Ive studied and got As in psych - ho hum. Majority of psychology's historical theorists were athiests so I take their opinion with a grain of salt.

Also, Im pleased I made a few people laugh with my sperm and knock knock joke quip lol

As a counselor, I use a quick "personality test" to help couples, co-workers and family members see how they are alike and different in personality, and why that sometimes causes conflict and misunderstandings. I certainly think that some personalities go together better than others, but any match can be successful if BOTH partners are willing to work towards love and understanding of the other.

As for "masculine" and "feminine" charecteristics--there are some very real general differences between men and women. I often talk about gender differences in counseling couples--men and women often communicate very differently, see things differently, and have different ways of coping with emotions. It's not a bad thing--in fact it's a very very GOOD thing that God created us differently. It's a perfect compliment if each person is willing to adapt and submit to the other.

Don't be hatin' on people who want to point out gender differences or personality differences just because you live in a culture that says that men and women are the SAME--THEY ARE NOT!!! In fact, if you are unsure about this, read the Bible. The Bible makes it very clear that men and women are different. Praise God for that!!
