Satan is still an angel in spirit form as he have always been. He became Satan after he was kicked out of heaven, meaning God's adversary, his enemy. He became known as the dragon and serpent because it was he that entered the serpent in the garden because the serpent was a witty, crafty, and cunning creature with mental acuteness, and could deceive the other animals. This was the only creature he could get to deceive Eve. That is how he got his name ,that old serpent the devil, the dragon.
