Is our deportment and speech worthy of trust?
• Amo 8:14 -> “They who swear by the sin of Samaria and say, As your god lives, O Dan; and, As the way of Beer-sheba lives; even they shall fall and never rise up again.”.
In the times of the Old Testament, men swore by that which they revered. Idolatrous Israelites swore by what was not God (Jer 5:7), or by other gods, as Baal (Jer 12:16), Milcom (Zep 1:5), etc. Also, they swore by Beersheba, which was an holy place in virtue of being associated with the patriarchs (Gen 21:31-33; 22:19; 26:23-25; 26:31-33; 28:10; 46:1).
It is truth that the Israelites was enjoined to swear by the Creator (Deu 6:13; 10:20), having blessings promised on those who swore by Him faithfully (Jer 4:2; 12:16). Nonetheless, in the New Testament Jesus instructed us not to swear:
• Mat 5:33-37 -> “Again, you have heard that it has been said to the ancients, "You shall not swear falsely, but you shall perform your oaths to the Lord." But I say to you, Do not swear at all! Not by Heaven, because it is God's throne; not by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet; not by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King; nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your word be, Yes, yes; No, no. For whatever is more than these comes from evil.”.
