He's just another fictional Christmas season character. It's just fun to say: Better be nice. Santa's watching you. Or: I wonder what Santa is going to get you. Or: Maybe Santa got you something good this year. 
Most people don't realize that Santa is actually the word for saint and it refers to a real person and a devout christian known as St. Nicholas, or Nikolas of Myra who lived in the 3rd century and was known to secretly leave coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him.

Yes, he is, in our house he takes the form of a woman who is about 42, who hangs up Christmas stockings on our fireplace, and does all the Christmas shopping. Our Santa Claus, in this female form also bakes the cookies herself, and leaves them for us, instead of us leaving them for "Santa".

I never did the satan claus thing. My ex-wife on the other hand did. My son was 4yrs old when we split. Just to keep the peace I didn't spill the beans on the great lie. Whenever my son brought up the subect, I just told him that I didn't know anything about that santa claus stuff. He found out from the kids at school when he was 8yrs old that it was all a lie. He still wasn't sure what to believe. He slowly got over it. I think that my son thinks that I am crazy sometimes because there are very few holidays that I do celibrate.

-The bracelet i want from Kay Jewelers
- The new iphone
- One pound (AND DONT THINK I WONT WEIGH IT SANTA!!) of Reese's
- Coach purse
-A gift card for 1,000,000,000 dollars to New York and Company
If he does not have any of those on his persons as he tries to fit himself down my chimney, i'll have him arrested for breaking and entering.

Flight316 I hope it wasn't as sad for your son as when I found out wrestling was fake. Ruined the whole thing for me. I do see the wisdom in celebrating as few a holidays as you can.

I am going to bargain with Santa about bringing me chocolate. I'm going to tell him if he brings me a pound of Rosebuds, I will in-turn give him a plate of Chunks Ahoy Cookies with a tall glass of chilled milk (however he has no idea that once he gives me the Rosebuds on Christmas Eve, I will hit him over the head with a bag of P.E.I. potatoes and tie him up with my Christmas tree lights, and then eat the Rosebuds and feed the Chunks Ahoy to his reindeer!!!).

I'm a bit cynical from my parents' total disapproval of anything Santa. They'd make a big fuss about not buying the wrapping paper or cards with Santa...no decorations of Santa (and I just still can't bring myself to buy them either!!)...when people mention him they'd say in no uncertain terms that Santa is a big fat lie...and "Why would you lie to your children?!?". Personally, I think he's the same as the Tooth Fairy...and I don't have a problem with that. What I DO have a problem with, is the fact that he's taken over Christmas......it's all so commercialized now, and SANTA has become the face of Christmas, when it should be all about JESUS. I think Santa can be a bit of fun, but I'll be letting my kids know (when I have them) that it's just pretend, and that Jesus is the focus of Christmas.

My thought:
If I teach my kids about the stereotypical Santa:
- He's kind, He knows everything, He can be everywhere in one night,
And then tell them:
God is good and kind. He knows everything. He is everywhere
...when they find out Santa is not real: - What will they think about God?....

When I have kids, I'm not going to lie to them by telling them a fictional character is real. Once they get older and find out he's not real, they'll wonder what other things their parents lied to them about, including God. I'd wager that there are more children that have a firm belief in Santa than children who have a firm belief in Jesus.
Same goes for the tooth fairy. We'll have some sort of prize thing for losing teeth, but it won't be based on some magical lie.
But for you folks who think lying to your children is good because everyone else does it, more power to you.

If I ever have kids, I dont think id tell them that Santa is real, it never made christmas any better for me when my parents told me he was real or any worse when they told me he wasn't. Im not sure id feel comfortable with lying to my kids like that either.
