you believe that passage in 2 Peter is speaking about smoking?

i don't say it's a good habit, but i think you should read it again. and i hope you don't get hurt when you fall off that high horse.

2 Peter 2:10 - 22 is an excellent study on addiction of any kind. In this case, the topic was smoking. Smoking is arguably one of the biggest addictions of any kind people grapple with. Many people become obsessed with unhealthy things when all they need is to control their lifestyle. Read 2 Peter 2:19 specifically, if you're in doubt, where we are warned about getting too involved with any one thing.

"They promise themselves freedom, but they themselves are not free. They are slaves of things that will be destroyed. For people are slaves of anything that controls them."

There are words of warning that people facing addictions can pay attention to in this passage that would equip them to go on a more positive journey. The passage specifically uses the word 'slave' for that very reason. 10 - 22 encourages us to seek help from those around us if we feel addicted or enslaved.

I'm not hurt in the least. If you've taken offence to something I pray the Lord enables you to understand things in a new light, sometimes perspective is all it takes. Blessings!

i have yet to see anyone post conclusive Biblical evidence smoking IS a sin. 1ofthem came closest when she quoted the passage about what comes out of a man being that which defiles him. (thank you, darlin'!)

i'm not offended at all, Laura. i think you're very young, and from your posts i conclude you think you have it all together and are 'doing everything right'. if i am wrong on that count, i ask your forgiveness. if i am right, you can expect God to humble you. i don't say this in any kind of wishful way, just God is faithful to find our weak spots and let us know about them, so we can learn to be wholly dependent on His grace and mercy... on HIM, and not ourselves. and so we can learn compassion for others.

God bless you, too.

It's up to you to read the bible and go on a journey with the Lord as to your own personal interpretation of what is considered acceptable in the Lord's eyes and what is indulging in the flesh. What is obvious to some, others take more time to learn and accept. Further still, none of us are here to 'convince' you personally but, rather, to educate the wider audience online who is interested in a deeper walk with Jesus. What God shows you in His own time is out of our control and up to you embrace.

Although I don't know you, it appeared personal from the outset. If you're a closer watcher of my posts, you would've observed me stating many times that I don't believe i'm perfect and I'm on my own journey with the Lord. That doesn't stop me however, in exploring topics and issues and sharing where the Lord has taken me in my personal and professional life with experiences such as this thread's topic and several others. There's nothing to forgive at all, I encourage you on your own journey with Christ!

Through all my life, blessings and lessons, God has shown me how incredibly faithful He is. Compassion goes hand in hand with understanding and it's only through educating ourselves and submitting ourselves to the Lord's instructions do we arrive here. Blessings.

Ooh What’s a Kentucky Bourbon Ball?
I like a Bourbon (sshhh don’t tell anyone but I have a cigar with it, you never know who is listening)
Hubby's thing, back when we were young and could afford such luxuries, was a glass of cognac to dip the mouth-end of his cigar in. He thought it was heaven. I'd rather eat liver. lol

I didn't mind when he smoked cigars, but the smell made me sick, so he couldn't smoke in the house. (A nice restaurant where they served cognac and back when people could smoke was fine... but I had to leave him alone after about five minutes. Cigars remind me too much of getting motion sickness in the car when my parents smoked and I was a little kid in the back seat in winter.)

Never dipped one. Although I know it’s done with the big cigars.

I enjoy the small ones. Like those Clint Eastwood smoked in the westerns.

I hate liver though

You're never going to be appease everyone's flesh and just because you've given your best understanding of the bible's stance on this issue or any other, it doesn't mean you should be discouraged from speaking on the topic. The Lord gives you positive encouragement in having a voice all the way!

How are you sure?
I will make this short. It could shorten your life in the flesh. But it won't keep you out of heaven. When the lord returns all that stuff is going to go away any way. For a while any way.

Smoking is a bad habit just as drinking a lot of sweet drinks. Also wearing dirty underwear always is a bad habit. Not brushing your mouth for so many days always is a bad habit. Eating a lot always is a bad bit. All these are bad habits that will make you to go to the hospital because you will be sick. All these bad habits comes from the devil because he is out to steal your joy, your good health; to destroy you and to kill you. Due to these bad habits, you will be sick and unable to do what you love and want to do. You will spend your resources which you shouldn't be spending to treat diseases and sicknesses . This is what the devil wants. He wants to see you suffer and spend your money and resources to treat diseases and sickness. So he will bring these bad habits to you.

So, don't accept such bad habits which comes from the devil. It is an instrument which the devil use to destroy the lives of people and steal from them, and also kill them.

Question can we lump Smoking and Drugs together? Both are bad habits, but any biblical evidence both are a sin? To those saying smoking is not a sin, same can be said for drugs and maybe alcohol. I'm not advocating any of that btw. Nor would I judge. I've struggled with porn, I know how strong addiction can be, and it's not as simple as one prayer. It's a process, therefore stop condemning people without stepping in their shoes.

But anything can become an idol- especially items of addictive nature. If you find yourself in a position where cigarettes are more important to you than God- then smoking can be a sin....
So when is this determined? Is it subject to one's opinion? Or subject to when the Spirit tells someone they need to quit?

Because the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
(1Jn 2:27 KJV)

How do we know we are abiding in Him?

And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
(1Jn 3:24 KJV)

There's a lot of reasons why it's a sin. It's damaging the body that God lovingly created for you, its addictive, and it is a huge waste of resources.

However, that doesn't mean that we should look down on people who smoke, because none of us are without blemish. Instead, we should treat them with love and respect.

If it comes between you and the Father...say, leaving the church service to smoke or not tithing because you can't afford it..due to that $8.00 pack you just bought...or not being in the Word because of it...that's an idol. Idolization is a sin. Also, if it's a depression issue...and you use it to combat the anxiety or depression....or whatever malady... it's a complication of your relationship. Is God patient? Yes Will He condemn you? Not if you're in Christ Jesus. You are a work in progress if you are. If you have accepted Jesus into your heart. He'll help you quit. 9 months free. Finally after many years of trying, I finally put God first in that area, too. Blessings -student
