Hi,
I created a website with an evangelism simulator that provides coherent feedback on the answers given. I faced strong rejection from experienced evangelists, who argued that evangelism cannot be taught because it comes from within.
Naturally, I questioned this claim in light of Scripture. Although evangelism should flow from genuine faith and a heart moved by love for Christ, the Bible clearly demonstrates that preparation, teaching, and improvement are part of being equipped for evangelistic ministry. Jesus Himself commanded His disciples to make disciples and teach them (Matthew 28:19–20). Apollos, although eloquent, mighty in the Scriptures, and fervent in spirit, still needed to be instructed by Priscilla and Aquila so that he could understand the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:24–26). Peter likewise instructs Christians to always be prepared to give an answer concerning the hope they possess (1 Peter 3:15).
Therefore, teaching evangelism does not mean turning evangelism into a mechanical technique, nor does it replace the work of the Holy Spirit. It means preparing Christians to communicate the gospel with greater faithfulness, clarity, wisdom, and love.
10 biblical references that support this claim:
1. Matthew 28:19–20 - Jesus connects the Great Commission with teaching.
2. Acts 18:24–26 - Apollos was fervent, yet he still needed instruction.
3. 1 Peter 3:15 - commands believers to be prepared to give an answer.
4. 2 Timothy 2:2 - Paul establishes the transmission of teaching to others.
5. 2 Timothy 2:15 - emphasizes being prepared to handle the Word of truth correctly.
6. Luke 6:40 - a disciple, when fully trained, will be like his teacher.
7. Ephesians 4:11–13 - Christ gives ministers for the equipping and edification of the saints.
8. Colossians 4:5–6 - provides guidance on how to conduct oneself and speak with outsiders.
9. 2 Timothy 4:2 - Paul instructs Timothy to preach and be ready.
10. Acts 2:42 - the early church devoted itself to the apostles’ teaching.
Someone who works behind the lines of evangelism and has no data or numbers to show how many souls they have won - this is the message that some people in positions of leadership in the church actually convey, even while knowing the story of Noah. Have you ever experienced this?
