Is the famine of Amos 8:11-12 happening now?

Amos 8:11-12
11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.
 
2 Timothy 4:3-4[SUP]3 [/SUP]For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

I believe those verses are referring to the "400 years of silence" before the Lord's first coming.

Quite possibly. But don't you think it could refer to the Babylonian exile of Israel?

Yes, it is happening now, and has been going on for a while now. The dividing line between those who keep God's Word as written with understanding vs. those listening to men's doctrines instead is getting much easier to recognize.

No - As long as we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us and the written words of scripture available, how could there be a famine?

If there is any problem, it is that people are getting so preoccupied with things of the world, and don't take the time to meditate on scripture. They are becoming hardened to the things of God. It is like a table set before them filled with the food of God and they just walk right by. The table is there, but they have not "tasted and seen that the Lord is good".
 
The majority of Christians don't even believe they have access to the words of God, only the originals in which God allowed to be destroyed.

no one has access to the originals. but some deceive themselves that they do

however what we do have is quite sufficient

That Amos 8 Scripture is about spiritual blindness... even upon one who takes the time... to study their Bible.

It's about this...

Isa 29:9-14
9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.


10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath He covered.


11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, "Read this, I pray thee": and he saith, "I cannot; for it is sealed":


12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, "Read this, I pray thee": and he saith, "I am not learned."


13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near Me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour Me, but have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the precept of men:


14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

Same thing is happening today with men who preach their organizational system line of doctrines that one man or a small group came up with, else they will lose their pension or job, for that's exactly how some preachers treat their position in the Church; hirelings, nothing more (John 10).

However, I am thinking that some of the words of the passage are referring to 'events' that are further into the future.

God's Word is eternal. It echoes through out history. All the cited fulfillments are part of that. Are we in the final spiritual famine induced wandering? Personally I would say, not yet, but we're definitely making our last spirals around that drain.
