Do you believe He was honest? Would He have lied? Why was the cross necessary?
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life."
The hell is so real and horrible, that God sent His only begotten Son to warn us, die paying for our sins so that those who would trust in Him could be saved from the horrors of the hell.
The teaching about the reality and horror of the hell is both loving and just, as it is true.
When it's about your eternal life you do not want to get lied to, and it is TRUTH that can set you free.
I'd like to add that it is not a wise thing to separate a verse and study it without looking to the fullness of the Scripture, as you might misinterpret it, just like it would have been the case when taking out one sentence from someone's speech. I am sure you would find loads of places that refer to the hell.
On the other side, you may argue saying that those who perish actually go to dust, while just those have eternal life who are getting saved. I don't think that you'd be right thinking that. Remember what God told in the garden of Eden: " but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."
Did Adam and Eve die physically on that day? We do not hear about that. So was God lieing to them when He said that they would surely die on that day when they eat from that tree? Surely, He did not lie.
Now let's look to another verse:
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life."
"He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him"
So, as you see, here we deal with another definition of death and life than the perishing of our earthly body, that we commonly call death. The bible may talk about death referring to either spiritual or physical death.
