Israel's Christian Awakening: A Controversial New Movement Wants to Cooperate More Closely with the Jewish State

This year, however, the familiar rhythms of Christmas season in the Holy Land have been disturbed by a new development: the rise of an independent voice for Israel's Christian community, which is increasingly trying to assert its separate identity. For decades, Arab Christians were considered part of Israel's sizable Palestinian minority, which comprises both Muslims and Christians and makes up about a fifth of the country's citizens, according to the Israeli government.

But now, an informal grass-roots movement, prompted in part by the persecution of Christians elsewhere in the region since the Arab Spring, wants to cooperate more closely with Israeli Jewish society—which could mean a historic change in attitude toward the Jewish state. "Israel is my country, and I want to defend it," says Henry Zaher, an 18-year-old Christian from the village of Reineh who was visiting Nazareth. "The Jewish state is good for us."

I guess the Christians in Palestine are caught between a rock and a hard place. An occupying force on one side and a people angry about the occupation on the other. Some choose one, others choose the other.

You may not all agree with this, but I've been shown convincingly, that the state Israel is the tribe of Judah. Christians around the world, as Children of Promise, need to be uniting with and supporting not only each other (which we should be doing all along, although, my thinking is that the denominational divide is God's way of scattering the holy people to the four winds, I digress) but we need to be uniting with our wayward brother Judah in a similar way as the church in Israel is doing. We also need to intercede for, and disciple, the church in Israel. We might even be able to encourage them to forgo erecting a giant statue of Jesus, and politicizing the term "Children of the Covenant", which is not (in my mind anyway) a political movement, but then again- it is what Israel always wanted. So even if I'm totally wrong on all points, and you disagree, we should all agree to stand with them in prayer. So thank you to Rachel, since I don't watch tv or read news much, I would never have known what was going on there.

Christians cannot compromise on their faith. Thats the disturbing part of this story, arab christians willing to compromise their faith to fit into the jewish state. That's not a good thing

that was not what i gathered from this article...

what i gathered is that more and more arab christians in israel are recognizing that they really have more in common with israeli jews than they do with arab muslims...and that they fare better under israel than they would in any islamist state...especially given how the 'arab spring' has turned out...and some of them are getting tired of the palestinian leadership pressuring them to always side with the mostly muslim palestinian nationalist movement on ethnic grounds...

really it appears more like many arab christians are becoming -less- willing to compromise their faith in order to fit into the political bloc of their fellow palestinian arabs...

"Your attempt to blame the difficult reality that Palestinian Christians face on Palestinian Muslims is a shameful manipulation of the facts intended to mask the damage that Israel has done to our community," they said in the letter. "The exaggerated growth of the Christian population in Israel that Mr. Oren claims is due primarily to the immigration of Russian Christians whom Israel was unable to distinguish from the Jewish immigrants pouring into the country after the fall of the Soviet Union."

yes i did question the parenting of those who put their children into harm's way and then complain to the international media that their children are in harm's way...

His 2008 release The Invention of the Jewish People documents their mostly non-Israelitish Khazar origins. Another is The Thirteenth Tribe by Jewish author and intellectual Arthur Koestler. The 2012 Johns Hopkins DNA study also supports this. The cat is out of the bag, the people of the Talmud are not of Judah or other Israelite tribes, they are mere proselytes to the Talmudic religion of the Judean Pharisees.

you keep bringing this up...saying it over and over doesn't make it true...

the truth is that this myth has been completely debunked...it is rejected by almost all historians...including the vast majority of jewish historians...and even the leading experts on ancient khazaria reject it...

elhaik's genetic study at johns hopkins has already been rightly torn apart because of a fatal flaw that completely invalidates is conclusion...the ethnic groups he used in his study as representative 'caucasus' populations actually had a closer historical affinity to the ancient middle east than to the caucasus region... this blunder really reveals a shocking inattention to history on elhaik's part...

virtually all other genetic studies to date continue to show that the modern jewish people have an ancient middle eastern origin...including one study completed just last year at the albert einstein college of medicine and published in the proceedings of the national academy of sciences...

the consensus of all the genetic studies is that the khazar people contributed about 12% to the modern ashkenazi jewish gene pool...enough to be interesting from a genetic and a historical perspective...but not nearly enough to validate claims that the modern jewish ethnicity consists largely of non israelite khazar imposters...

well first of all you appear to have not read the article...which is actually typical for people who hold views like yours...

the article was about the christians in israel beginning to more vocally assert their religious identity as christians...instead of self identifying on an ethnic basis with the mostly muslim arabs as was more common in the past...

your claim that israel didn't largely reject christ is one of the most bizarre things i have ever heard...the new testament is full of examples of the majority of abraham's physical descendants rejecting christ...which is what allowed the gospel to go to the gentiles in the first place...

this may be the silliest basis for anti zionism yet...
