A valid question. The University of Oxford did a study which looked at suicide in the U.S. and Europe with respect to the Great Recession and what they found is that suicides sharply rose during the recession:

Suicide Rate In U.S. And Europe Climbed During Great Recession : Shots - Health News : NPR

The middle-aged male was particularly vulnerable as they lost their jobs at a much higher rate than women while their rehire rate was far lower. Note that across 24 countries, men have a shockingly high rate of death by suicide compared with women (see .Nock MK, Borges G, Bromet EJ, et al. Suicide and suicidal behavior. Epidemiol Rev 2008;30:133-154).

I knew one of them. You would have never guessed in a million years this guy would commit suicide. He worked for a good company, had a good family and loving wife, etc...

But he was a fifty year old man who lost his career job and couldn't find another. The bills mounted and the bank started foreclosure.

However, he had a large life insurance plan that was long past the contestability period.

So he did the stereotypical suicide which middle-aged WASPs have become known for. He checked into a cheap motel room with a large bottle of good Scotch and a .45.

*Boom.*

He left behind a grieving soon-to-be-a-millionaire widow.

I wonder if any of these studies take into account the suicides commited because of job loss?

Some of my family are first responders, and its been their exspeariance, that the suicide rate has increaced greatly, many doing so? because of job loss and income failing to keep up with needs.

God bless

How do we account for all the undocumented workers in the USA?

We have always said that figures never lie but liars sure can figure. Anybody that trusts government numbers is a little suspect in the sanity department. Look at the numbers on the healthcare act.

PEW estimates there's over 8 million illegal aliens working in the U.S. plus millions of non-working illegal aliens.

Just as large a problem as illegal immigration is legal immigration. I'll quote FAIR:

"There is NO shortage of American workers with science, technology, engineering, and math backgrounds. The U.S. produces more qualified STEM graduates than there are jobs created in the industry every year, and there are more than twice as many people in the United States with STEM degrees than are working in the industry.

If there were a chronic shortage of these workers, as tech executives claim, salaries for these occupations would be rising sharply. In fact, earnings for tech workers have been depressed by the industry’s use of foreign guest workers, and in some cases have even decreased.

Behind the industry’s calls for guest worker programs that attract the "best and brightest" is the reality that U.S. tech companies are suppressing wages by discriminating against qualified American workers, all with the full complicity of the federal government.

It is astounding to realize that Americans are being denied job opportunities in America while at the same time politicians are calling for the expansion of guest worker programs that will exacerbate this problem."

In other words, Obama's taking exactly the wrong approach (as usual) and it's seriously hurting millions and millions of American families right now.

Not to mention the US debt increases under Obama is more than all us president combined from Washington to Clinton.

(CNSNews.com) - The total federal debt of the U.S. government has now increased more than $7 trillion during the slightly more than five and a half years Barack Obama has been president.
That is more than the debt increased under all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined, and it is more debt than was accumulated in the first 227 years of this nation's existence--from 1776 through 2003.
The total federal debt first passed the $7-trillion mark on Jan. 15, 2004, after President George W. Bush had been in office almost three years.

When President Obama took office on Jan. 20, 2009, the total federal debt was $10,626,877,048,913.08. As of the close of business on July 30, 2014, it had risen to $17,618,599,653,160.19--up $6,991,722,604,247.11 from Obama’s first inauguration day.
By the close of business on July 31, 2014, it had risen to $17,687,136,723,410.59—up $7,060,259,674,497.51 since Obama first inauguration day.
As of June, there were 115,097,000 households in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The $17,687,136,723,410.59 in debt the federal government had accumulated as of the end of July equaled $153,671.57 per household.

Indeed. And, of course, interest must be paid on debt until the debt itself is paid. Since the national debt continues to mount, so does the interest which has to be paid annually.

And, with the annual deficit expected by analysts to start rapidly climbing again beginning in 2016, the interest payments are projected to dominate the federal budget in less than a decade.
