JEPHTHAH'S DAUGHTER
BURNT OFFERING?

The topic came up recently in the bible study chat on this site that I visit occasionally.
My position was (and is) that no - Jephthah did not offer his daughter as a burnt offering. I was surprised at the number of individuals who held the opposing view! This topic came to my attention around 20 - 23 years ago when in another chat an atheist made the claim that "Hey, you worship a God that accepts human sacrifices!" Needless to say, I was flabbergasted. My only response was "Wait ..... What! Let me get back to you on this one...."
Hence I investigated the incident found in Judges 11 and even enlisted a multitude of online ~biblical authorities~ in my search for an answer to this obvious conundrum. For myself, I am both confident and at peace with my position.
However, I fully realize that many hold the oppositional view point and have started this post with the full intention of responding to those objections. I purposefully refrained from doing so after each chapter of the story was posted as I wanted all to read the entire story BEFORE listing their objections.
So, if any wish to discuss / debate, I am open to do so at this time.:D
Oh, and yes, I alone am responsible for this story. It is a compilation of scripture, historical reference and jewish lore. I made it available as a blog posting so that any who wish to read the story in it's entirety could do so with out having to search through the miscellaneous category for every chapter.

Be Well,

The first time I heard that explanation was also from an atheist.
