The Significance of the Name​

In the Old Testament, God progressively revealed Himself through names that described His covenant relationship with His people. In the New Testament, those revelations are fulfilled in one name.
Isaiah 9:6

"And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

Matthew 1:21

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

The name Jesus (Hebrew: Yeshua) means "Jehovah is salvation" or "Jehovah saves."

The Progressive Revelation of God's Name​

God revealed Himself as "I AM"​

Exodus 3:14

"I AM THAT I AM."

When Jesus declared:
John 8:58

"Before Abraham was, I am."

The Jews immediately understood He was identifying Himself with the God who spoke to Moses.

Joel's Prophecy​

Joel 2:32

"Whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered."

Peter applies this to Jesus.
Acts 2:21

"Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Paul likewise quotes Joel concerning Jesus.
Romans 10:9-13
Paul concludes:

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

The "Lord" in Paul's argument is Jesus Christ.

The One Saving Name​

The Old Testament repeatedly speaks of salvation coming through Jehovah.
The New Testament reveals the saving name by which Jehovah's salvation is administered.

The Name Above Every Name​

Philippians 2:9-11

"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow...
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord..."

Paul echoes Isaiah 45:23, where Jehovah declared:

"Unto me every knee shall bow..."

The honor Jehovah declared for Himself is shown to Jesus.

The Fulfillment of the Covenant Name​

Throughout the Old Testament, God progressively revealed Himself through titles such as Jehovah-Jireh, Jehovah-Rapha, Jehovah-Shalom, and Jehovah-Rohi. Each name revealed one aspect of His covenant relationship with His people. The New Testament presents Jesus as the complete fulfillment of those revelations. He is the sacrifice God provides, the healer, the shepherd, the giver of peace, the source of righteousness, the sanctifier, and "God with us."
This helps explain why the apostles consistently centered their ministry on the name of Jesus. They preached repentance in His name (Luke 24:47), healed in His name (Acts 3:6), water baptized in His name (Acts 2:38; 10:48; 19:5), and proclaimed that salvation is found in no other name (Acts 4:12). The New Testament presents the name of Jesus not as a departure from the revelation of Jehovah, but as its fulfillment—the revealed covenant name through which God's saving work is made known under the New Covenant.


The Old Testament progressively reveals who Jehovah is through many covenant names. The New Testament reveals that all the fullness of God is manifested in Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:9), and that the saving power, authority, and covenant promises associated with Jehovah are exercised in the name of Jesus, the name that means "Jehovah saves."

Jesus' Hebrew name, "Yeshua," is found in all of these Old Testament verses:

God's name revealed to us represents His character and blessings to us.

But it will not reveal all of His attributes for us to know and have in blessings for we cannot be omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient.

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Gen 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Exo 6:2 And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD:
Exo 6:3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

God was known as the LORD God, then Almighty God, then Jehovah when He was going to deliver the Hebrews from Egypt which the name represents physical deliverance, and physical blessings.

Pro 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?

The name Jesus was revealed when God manifest in flesh would be revealed to Israel for salvation which represents spiritual deliverance, and spiritual blessings.

Php 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Php 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Php 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Eph 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.

Jesus is the highest name revealed to mankind even in the world to come.

Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God:

and I will write upon him my new name.

Jesus has a name that no person knows which would have to be greater than the name Jesus representing Him greater than we can know.

But this event is before the New Jerusalem.

And He will write His new name upon the saints.

Rev 22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
Rev 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

The saints at the New Jerusalem the name of God will be written in their foreheads which must be the new name Jesus will write upon them.

But it seems like the saints cannot know that name for Jesus is the highest revealed name in the world to come.

And it would seem if that new name gives them a bigger blessing they cannot know it.

And it seems like it would not be beneath the name Jesus since it is Jesus' new name for He is not going to decrease.

Which Jesus' new name must be an exaltation to himself but not an exaltation to the saints but the name is written upon their foreheads for they are His Church.

Like Revelation 19 says Jesus has a name that no person knows which is stated before the New Jerusalem it must not apply there too for Jesus is the highest revealed name to the saints.
