“Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification.”

Why did John have disciples after he proclaimed Jesus to be the Messiah? Why didn’t those disciples follow Jesus? That’s never made sense to me.

In John 1, two of John the Baptist's followers leave John after Jesus
is revealed as the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s testimony and followed Jesus.
He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ).

Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon
son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter).

They did indeed :).....

JOHN 1:35-37 35 Again, the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus walking, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

I hypothesize there were numerous groups going around who were fundamentally all followers of Jesus, but discipled under someone else. Jesus preached to a lot of people, but kept 12 chosen disciples within his inner circle of followers.

38John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40For the one who is not against us is for us. 41For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.

Jesus personally chose each one of His apostles from various places.

5And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
6¶And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
7And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
8I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Did anyone notice that Jesus followed the requirements of the Nazarene priesthood when He was baptized?

John the Baptist himself had misgivings about Jesus as the Messiah. So it follows that his disciples did not immediately become disciples of Christ. However after John was beheaded, things might have changes.

The Bible isn't silent on it though. Below it shows how Jesus gave his twelve disciples divine authority over demons and gave them the miraculous power to heal.

1And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
Luke 9:1-2

So the way to cast out demons and heal is by the power of God and Jesus granted that to his twelve disciples in his earthly ministry.

There will be a lot of individuals who were not one of the hand-picked twelve disciples who will do all sorts of mighty works in Jesus' name:

"On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?"

I must point out that Jesus is addressing His APOSTLES......disciples are not given authority
Mixing scipture may make you think you have a point, but better study will help you overcome that.
Why would you lump Matt 7:22 with Luke 9: 1-2???

I used those two verses together because those verses are related. It is by the Spirit of God that demons are cast out according to Matthew 12:28. So the context in Matthew 7:22 and Luke 9:1-2 are that there are the 12 that Jesus chose to give the Holy Spirit to and then there are those who can perform mighty works but aren't known to God as described in Matthew 7.

Does that help you or did you read those verses a different way?
