I am really struggling with my faith. A verse that has always haunted me is James 1:2 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds."

I know what it goes on to say about the testing of faith but do we really HAVE to be JOYFUL in times of sadness? As a Christian I feel like I'm bad for being sad because this one lady was like "Well look at what Jesus did for you." I feel hopeless then and very guilty for having FEELINGS!

Even with the promise of heaven I feel hopeless because I just want the sadness and confusion to end now...or at least find some people who won't shame me for having feelings and who will be patient with me and just....won't make me feel bad! I am so fed up with Christians today it makes me sick!

Ok rant over and thank you for listening!

CC is awesome btw. This has been like the only Christian chat site where people are actually nice so thank you for that.

I too find myself often in tears, and for many reasons .. Sometimes so very intense that no sound comes out. Just because a person iscrying does not mean that they have lost joy, it simply means that they are crying at the moment. One year in the flesh perspective is less than a minute in a scriptural perspective of a day with the lord is as a thousand years. The bible also says that godly sorrow works repentance not to be repented of.
I hope that when you are sorrowful it is because you love good and perfect, and all that is God...which I sense that you do. You are loved.

I think joy is something different than situational happiness. Joy is an internal constant thing. The ability to see forward with hope. Even if the situation is distressing or depressing.

James 1:2 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds."

"Consider it"

To me meaning that it may not be joyful now but count it as joy/a positive because these things can make us stronger in HIM.

Sometimes when things go "well" we can forget about Him, I have in the past, these verses can explain better than I can, especially the 1st Hebrews passage, I have read this so so many times to remind me He is guiding, not always a fun path, bu in the end, may it lead to joy and proper guidance so we may see Him...

Hebrews 12:3-11, "For consider Him Who endured such opposition against Himself from sinners, so that you would not become weary, and faint in your minds. You yourselves have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as unto sons: My son (or daughter), do not despise the chastening of Yahweh, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom Yahweh loves, He chastens, and scourges every son (or daughter) whom He receives. If you endure chastening, Yahweh deals with you as with sons (or daughters); for what son (or daughter) is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all are partakers, then you are bastards and not sons (or daughters). Furthermore, we have had fleshly fathers who corrected us, and we gave them reverence; should we not even more be subject to Father Yahweh, and live? For they truly chastened us for a few days as they thought best; but He, for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful at the present time, but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it produces the peaceable fruit of righteousness, that is, for those who have been trained by it."

2 Corinthians 12:7-10, " Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong."

Hebrews 12:12-17, "Therefore, strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And follow the straight paths made for your feet, so that the lame may not be turned out of the way, but rather may be healed. Follow peace with all men; and holiness, without which no one will see Yahweh: Searching diligently, so that no one falls short of the honor of Yahweh; so that no root of bitterness grows up to cause trouble--for because of this, many are defiled; So that there is no a, fornicator nor profane person, like Esau, Who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no way for repentance, though with tears sought it out."

Jesus had emotions like us. Isaiah 53:3
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."

Jesus also told us we would have troubles in this world, but to be joyful for he had overcome the world, as we are also told to overcome the world.

John 16:20-21[SUP]20 [/SUP]Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
[SUP]21 [/SUP]A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world."

things on earth are getting exponentially worse and worse. 'the wicked are becoming more wicked' 'the righteous are becoming more righteous' 'those who seek to live righteous in yahshua will suffer persecution and physical suffering.' 'the whole world/ population/ refuses to repent of worshiping demons' ...

so , things aren't going to 'appear' any better, nor be any better, until yahshua returns when all of israel cries out with one heart, one soul, one mind, one voice 'blessed is he who comes in the name adonai' as when he entered jerusalem on a donkey before his execution/torture/crucifixion.

the joy is a gift, like eternal life, and as is peace and righteousness, to ekklesia, by grace in yahshua, all in all,
by faith in his name, in him, and even said faith being a gift, a wondrous generous unselfish without merit gift from yahweh.....

yahweh gives peace, joy and righteousness, and eternal life, without measure - freely, fully, completely, delightfully --- to the ekklesia who are immersed in yahshua and living his life now on earth. the merely religious, well, they shouldn't think that they will receive anything from yahweh nor any blessing in yahshua as well. this is an ongoing source of sore vexing, just as it was for lot in sodom, and perhaps for noah as he built the ark over 100 years.... all around are the wicked, seemingly doing as they please and seemingly getting away with it.... until judgment comes.

I am not sure which issue you want addressed...is it because you think you are bad for being sad....or is it because you feel guilty for having feelings...or both???
if you need prayer or advice in a particular area... PM

Note that James says 'consider it' not 'feel joy when you fall into trials'

This suggests a few things:

1) It isn't the natural response to trails - but takes conscious effort

2) It isn't about feeling - feelings are not considered. It is about mental attitude. James will then go on to explain in the next verses why we should consider trials as something to be rejoiced over

3) After that then he then suggests we pray for wisdom - that is not a new instruction but is linked back to considering trails joyfully - he is saying if you struggle with this go to God and pray about that he might give you the insights you need to enable to consider your trials as pure joy.
