Soldiers told of the horrific torture meted out by terrorists in the Nairobi mall massacre yesterday with claims hostages were dismembered, had their eyes gouged out and were left hanging from hooks in the ceiling.
Men were said to have been castrated and had fingers removed with pliers before being blinded and hanged.
Children were found dead in the food court fridges with knives still embedded in their bodies, it was claimed.

Most of the defeated terrorists, meanwhile, were reportedly discovered ‘burnt to ashes’, set alight by the last extremist standing to try to protect their identities.

The horrifying details came yesterday as the first pictures emerged from within the wreckage of the building, showing piles of bodies left strewn across the floor.

A third of the mall was destroyed in the battle between terrorists and Kenyan troops.

Yesterday, soldiers and doctors who were among the first people into the mall after it was reclaimed on Tuesday, spoke of the horrifying scenes inside.

‘You find people with hooks hanging from the roof,’ said one Kenyan doctor, who asked not to be named.

‘They removed eyes, ears, nose. They get your hand and sharpen it like a pencil then they tell you to write your name with the blood. They drive knives inside a child’s body.

'Actually if you look at all the bodies, unless those ones that were escaping, fingers are cut by pliers, the noses are ripped by pliers. Here it was pain.’

A soldier, who took pictures at a bread counter and at the ArtCaffe, said he was so traumatised by what he saw he has had to seek counselling.

Bomb disposal experts with sniffer dogs were yesterday painstakingly combing the part of the building still standing for explosives before clearing forensic officers, police and troops to search for bodies

During the firefight, hostages reportedly had their throats slashed from ear to ear and were thrown screaming from third-floor balconies as the siege came to a bloody end. Forensics teams, still sifting through the mountains of rubble, fear many more bodies are yet to be found.

Shell-shocked Kenyan troops said the inside of the Israeli-run mall resembled a ‘scene from a horror movie’ with blood spattered everywhere and dead bodies strewn across the floor.

Between 10 and 15 terrorists are thought to have stormed the mall on Saturday, according to Kenyan officials.
The police said five insurgents were killed in the battle and at least 10 taken into custody.

U.S. intelligence received reports of a serious threat in Kenya before last week’s terrorist attack at a Nairobi mall that left 62 dead and more than 150 injured, NBC News reported.

Officials said that NSA reviewed intelligence of a “credible” threat.

Kenyan intelligence officials are to be questioned by the country's MPs about whether or not they had advance warning of the deadly Westgate Shopping Mall attack.

Nine suspects are now in custody following the gun and grenade assault, which is believed to have been carried out by Islamist militants from the al Qaeda-linked Somali group al Shabaab.

Mr Lenku also insisted no gunmen escaped in the chaotic scenes that followed the attack, despite some witnesses claiming one of the attackers joined the shoppers as they were fleeing.

Kenyan police assisted by US, Israeli and European experts are still poring over the partially wrecked building.

Investigators have also identified a car used by the gunmen and found in it an "assortment of illegal weapons".

The Red Cross has said 59 people remain missing, though the Kenyan government has said no one was unaccounted for.

Six British nationals were among the victims when gunmen stormed the upmarket Westgate shopping centre.

At least 50 Kenyans as well as victims from France, China, Ghana, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Peru and the Netherlands were also killed.

A candlelit vigil was held for the dead at a makeshift memorial near the shopping centre just before sunset on Sunday.

It had been thought that a number of attackers and hostages had been trapped under rubble when the roof the mall collapsed, but the Kenyan government has said it believes no hostages were left in the mall "unless forensic evidence shows otherwise".

What caused the collapse has not been revealed but a government official admitted on Saturday it happened as a result of action by Kenyan forces.

Kenyan authorities had intelligence pointing to an attack in Nairobi a day before the Westgate mall attack. According to counter-terrorism documents, the government and military were warned that al-Shabaab was planning an attack on the capital where it would storm a building and hold hostages.

There are also reports that Kenyan intelligence agents were at Westgate a few hours before the crowded shopping centre was struck by heavily armed terrorists last Saturday, in a four-day siege that left at least 67 people dead.

"We cannot say that this attack comes as a surprise," said Farah Maalim, former deputy speaker of the Kenyan National Assembly. "The possibility of something like this happening, and of failures in the Kenyan intelligence community, has worried us for years." Maalim added: "We have an intelligence service more worried about internal party politics than about threats to national security."

It was announced yesterday that a sixth Briton has died following the siege. The Foreign Office has said it cannot rule out the possibility of further casualties.

Kenya refuses to comment on reports of warnings prior to the attack, but officials say they are still investigating the relationship between the attackers and al-Shabaab's local offshoot, al-Hijra. In the past, Kenya's large Somali-Kenyan population has borne the brunt of suspicion for involvement in terrorism, but sources say that the authorities are now focusing investigations on ethnic Kenyan converts to Islam for suspected links in the Westgate attack. One young convert was arrested and allegedly tortured last week, say human rights groups, for his suspected role in al-Hijra and Westgate. Allegations of human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings by the Kenyan authorities have gone hand in hand with their continuing investigations into al-Shabaab and al-Hijra networks in Kenya.

Terrorist activity in cells in cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa has led to a spate of arrests – including the warrant for the arrest of British woman Samantha Lewthwaite – and what are believed to be assassinations after senior figures such as Aboud Rogo Mohammed, a former leader of al-Hijra, have been killed in unexplained circumstances.

Experts say that, as al-Shabaab has been weakened in Somalia, it has focused more and more on Kenya and its al-Hijra cell. In a report earlier this year, the United Nations group of experts that monitors the activities of al-Shabaab points to the appointment of a new leader for the group in Kenya last year, Sheikh Ahmad Iman Ali, as the impetus for a wave of grenade attacks and improvised explosive device explosions in Kenya, which have killed scores in recent months.

The report also warns that al-Hijra was planning large-scale attacks such as the one on the Westgate mall. "Al-Shabaab no longer recruits young Somali men to carry out dirty work for them," said Abdiwahab Sheikh Abdisamad, a Somali-Kenyan Horn of Africa specialist at Kenyatta University in Nairobi. "Now they have got members from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, even Comoros – these are the ones carrying out attacks."

The diverse nature of al-Shabaab recruits is backed up by the group's own online propaganda. One photo, published on a pro-al-Shabaab website this year, shows light-skinned and at least one apparently white recruit in desert military uniform during a parade. The site claims that the images were taken at Barawe, a port in south-eastern Somalia where the Kenyan-born suspected al-Qaida operative Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan was killed in a US military raid in 2009.

"Al-Shabaab is getting global support. It does not belong to Somalis any more. They have a strong network, and they are going from China to Chile, from Khartoum to Canada," said Abdisamad. "They want to Islamise the whole world, they have a global agenda and are getting advice and recruits from everywhere."

Yet despite widespread knowledge of the activities of al-Hijra, little has ostensibly been done to disrupt the group. "There are reasons why you don't just smash these networks up," said an international intelligence source. "You have to be very surgical in the way that you take it apart, with targeted prosecutions or assassinations."

Some have speculated that Kenya lacks any serious intent to disrupt al-Shabaab. "If we wanted to eliminate al-Shabaab in Somalia, we could do it in less than three months. But it seems we decided we didn't want to eliminate them completely because then we would have no legitimacy for being in Somalia," said Maalim. "Somalia is a cash cow for all the countries in the region," Maalim added. "It's a free-for-all. And in Kenya the terrorist attack seems a source of celebration for some – now we can challenge the international criminal court, we receive equipment and arms from the US and other allies, we can get the aid money flowing."

Kenya's counter-terrorism and intelligence strategy will come under increasing scrutiny as details continue to emerge from the rubble of the Westgate shopping centre, where an unknown number of bodies still lie buried after a large part of the structure collapsed. Seventy-one people are still missing, and no bodies have yet been recovered.

"Five suspected terrorists were killed during the operation and the ongoing forensic investigations will ascertain their identities," said the Kenyan government. "These investigations will answer the questions being raised about their nationalities and gender."

False Flag: Was the Kenyan Terror Siege an ‘Inside Job’?

In the aftermath of 9/11 and the London 7/7 bombings it was later revealed that security agencies such as the CIA, FBI and MI5 had prior knowledge of coordinated attacks. As 21Wire has pointed out, the latest attack in Nairobi, Kenya, has many of the tell-tale signs of a classic false flag operation, with its problem, reaction, solution narrative coming to light…

According to Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, security organs and intelligence officers had prior knowledge of a future attack within Nairobi, which included the Westgate Shopping Mall.

Sonko claims to have assisted two women three months ago, stating that they were looking to offer information to police about the Al-Shabaab militia that was seeking to target specific areas in the region.

Other targets were named by Sonko from his conversation with the two mystery women:

“They mentioned Westgate Mall, Village Market, Parliament and the Kenyatta International Conference Centre as their targets.”

In addition to Sonko’s claims about prior knowledge of a terror plot, there has been some very troubling information surrounding the official narrative, as new information has emerged exposing a potential deep cover operation.

The Westfield Group, and its Israeli owner Frank Lowy (Photo left) apparently owned the Westgate Mall that had been under siege for several days. Lowy, as it turns out, had another business operation go up in flames over a decade ago, with fellow businessman Larry Silverstein of Silverstein Properties. That’s right, Silverstein and Lowy were supposedly compensated to the tune of 7.1 billion after an insurance payout following the destruction of the Twin Towers on 9/11.

The Kenyan siege has many other anomalies, including that of the Special Air Serviceman who reportedly saved a hundred lives when the attack subsequently broke out. In addition to the SAS man, it was reported that several agents had been on the scene, American, British as well as Israeli, by mainstream accounts, which prompted Israeli defense officials to deny any involvement in the assault.

‘Twin Terror’

During the 1998 double embassy attacks it was later revealed that they too were a product of manufactured terror, as were the clandestine attacks within Mumbai in 2008 and the mass shooting at dual locations in Norway in 2011, not to mention the events surrounding the Boston bombing in 2013.

Usually these kinds of attacks involve some sort of GLADIO – strategy of tension, as the West has been found to put pressure on nation-states by orchestrating terror events to guide a certain outcome geopolitically.

Australian news outlet Adelaidenow reported on other information suggesting this latest incident in Kenya was indeed orchestrated, including Al-Shabab terrorist’s accusing the Kenyan government of demolishing the Westgate Mall:

“Al-Shabab, whose name means “The Youth” in Arabic, has said the mall attack was in retribution for Kenyan forces’ push into Somalia.

The group claimed that the Kenyan government assault team carried out “a demolition’’ of the building, burying 137 hostages in rubble.

A government spokesman denied the claim and said Kenyan forces were clearing all rooms, firing as they moved and encountering no one.”

Given the facts surrounding the Westgate Mall attack, if true, along with some outlets reporting crisis actors on location, one can only surmise this latest terror scene is just another false flag operation…

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko sensationally told the Senate that security organs and intelligence officers were aware of an impending attack on key areas in Nairobi, including the Westgate Mall.

Sonko claimed that he had helped two women of either Asian or Arabic origin to offer information to police on Al-Shabaab militiamen who were targeting sections of Nairobi. He gave the revelations as the Senate took time off its business to discuss the terror attack on the mall.

He said the women had approached him three months ago with information to the effect that the gang, which had rented a house in Parklands and Westlands, were planning a major attack.

“They mentioned Westgate Mall, Village Market, Parliament and the Kenyatta International Conference Centre as their targets,” claimed Sonko.

The Motion was moved by Leader of Majority Kithure Kindiki, who termed the attack a national disaster.

Attacking members of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), Sonko told the House that after getting the information from the two women, he assisted them to record their statements with the police and the intelligence officers for further investigation.

He said the two women were initially living with the gang in the rented houses but had escaped after being showed the items that the suspects were preparing for the attack.

Though the Senator declined to give the exact details that the two women gave the police, he said that he was ready to record a statement to that effect.

“I know I will shock many people here. These people have remained in this area planning the attack for about three months and despite the investigators getting that information they could not quell the attack,” said Sonko.

Kenya mall attacker reportedly apologized to, freed British boy, 4, who called him "a very bad man"

LONDON One of the attackers behind the deadly siege on a mall in Kenya reportedly pleaded for forgiveness and gave a four-year-old British boy chocolate bars after the youngster called him "a very bad man."

According to U.K. newspaper The Sun, Elliott Prior, from Berkshire, England, stood up to the gunman to protect his sister Amelie, 6, and his mother Amber, who was shot in the leg in the attack on the Westgate mall in Nairobi.

"You're a bad man, let us leave," Elliott shouted at the gunman, according to his uncle Alex Coutts, who spoke to The Sun for an article published Tuesday.

The militant from the al Qaeda-linked Somali terror group al-Shabab allegedly gave him a couple Mars bars and told his family: "Please forgive me, we are not monsters," before letting them escape.

A picture taken by the Getty photo agency captured the moment the three survivors left the mall, with Elliott still clutching the chocolate bars.

Coutts, 42, told The Sun his relatives "had a lucky escape."

"The terrorists said if any kids were alive in the supermarket they could leave. Amber made a decision to stand up and say, 'Yes'. Then Elliott argued with them and called them bad men. He was very brave," said Coutts.

Making Sense of Kenya’s Westgate Mall Massacre

The Westgate mall, which is owned by Israelis, was a glitzy mecca for rich Kenyans and expats, a symbol of Kenya’s newfound decadence. My wife and I went on dates there all the time, catching a movie in a theater as comfy as any in the United States and then dropping $100 for some sushi. After we had kids, we’d take them to Westgate for shopping and ice cream, and it’s where my son Apollo, born and raised in Kenya, rode his first escalator. Westgate, actually, was where I interviewed my first real live Somali pirate (by phone). He was bobbing on the bridge of a hijacked tanker in the middle of the Indian Ocean. I was sitting at a cafe, drinking a banana smoothie.

On Sept. 21, at 11:30 a.m., on a typically bright and pleasant Nairobi morning, Islamist militants with military-grade weaponry stormed into Westgate, turning it into an abattoir. The first of the more than 60 people who were gunned down were sitting at that same cafe where I used to do my interviews, and the steps that I used to trot up holding my son’s hand are now smeared with blood.

For the past seven years that I’ve lived in Kenya, I’ve been following two very different story lines that represent what’s happening in contemporary Africa and that collided that fateful day in Westgate. The first is of the dramatic expansion of Africa’s middle class, now more than 300 million people, and perhaps there’s no better place on the continent to watch this than in Nairobi, where new office blocks are rising above the tin-shack slums, new bistros are popping up all over the place and taxi drivers are getting on Facebook. It’s essentially Africa joining the world.

When I first came here more than 20 years ago, the difference between life in the States and life in Kenya was enormous. There were barely any malls, for instance, and they sold things like yellow plastic jerrycans and roughly machined pots. Now you can get everything here — the latest Macs, frozen yogurt, Old El Paso taco mix — and at Westgate, it was all under one roof.

But at the same time that I’ve been chronicling this rapid, almost dizzying development, I’ve become a specialist in despair. Sub-Saharan Africa is still home to some of the poorest, most violent countries on earth: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, the Central African Republic — places where the government is a ghost and civilians are stalked, raped and killed by men with guns. You have no idea how many guns are in these places, and at the end of the day, all that separates Kenya from Somalia, the promising and the broken, is a thin line in the desert that usually goes unpatrolled. To live the good life here, to take the kids to the water park and hang out in new wine bars while a medieval mix of famine, plagues, warlords, pirates and sudden death seethed next door, did seem too good to be true.

And we had been warned. One weekend, as my wife and I were strapping the kids into the car, about to head out for the week’s shopping, a friend from the American Embassy called to say there had been a terrorist alert (another one) and to stay away from Village Market, another nice mall.

It might sound as if we go to malls a lot. We do. Nairobi doesn’t have so many public parks or playgrounds or areas to stroll. People meet up in malls. On Saturday mornings, families flock to the malls.

The Shabab, the Somali militant group that has taken credit for the massacre at Westgate, knew this. They knew they were going to kill children, and according to witnesses, some of the assailants lifted their rifles and deliberately shot down toddlers.

I actually know some Shabab commanders from my first visit to Somalia in 2006, when the Shabab practically operated in the open. One night, a top commander named Abu Monsur, now one of the most wanted men in East Africa, came to my hotel to give me a beautiful Koran, trimmed in gold leaf. With a tear falling from his eye, Abu Monsur clasped both my hands and asked me to convert to Islam. He was passionate, devout and deadly serious.

Back then, the Shabab were Islamists, and they were militants, but they were also nationalists, hoping to rule Somalia, and many Somalis liked them for running out the warlords who had kept their country steeped in anarchy for 15 years. But the Shabab were also colluding with Qaeda terrorists, and over the past few years, as the United States bankrolled a proxy force of African armies, including Kenya’s, to destroy them, the Shabab became flamboyantly brutal.

They stepped up amputations, beheadings and stonings. A Somali girl told me, in barely audible puffs of whispers, how the Shabab had buried one of her friends up to her neck in sand, and then bashed in her brain with rocks. The Shabab didn’t care anymore. They were like a cornered animal. Even Osama bin Laden said it was too much.

I had this sinking feeling that when the Shabab finally gave up any hope of ruling Somalia, they would strike Nairobi. They had been reluctant before, because Nairobi was their back office, where the white-collar Shabab lived, the accountants, financiers and logisticians. The instant they hit here, the Shabab leaders knew, Nairobi’s Somali community would fall under such intense pressure and scrutiny that it would be impossible to do business.

But the way they struck — the scale, the organization, the drawn-out siege, the ruthlessness — was especially terrorizing. Most of us expected a big, indiscriminate bomb. Instead, the Shabab sent a death squad of 10 to 15 shooters, who stalked men, women and children, executing them one by one as they curled up in various corners of the mall and begged for mercy. Some Muslims identified themselves and were spared.

Everyone in Kenya has relived this terror to some degree, visualizing what it would have been like to be spread over your children or squeezing your wife’s hand as the killers’ footsteps came closer. One couple was found intertwined on the floor, together to the end.

KENYA can absorb a single disaster. In 1998, Al Qaeda simultaneously blew up the American Embassies here and in Tanzania, a harbinger of the 9/11 attacks, and Kenya stumbled but it didn’t fall. People rallied together, changes were made and confidence was restored. I saw this happen again after a dreadful election in 2007 when more than 1,000 people were killed in ethnic clashes. Dead people were strewn across Nairobi’s streets and thick black smoke churned up from the slums. I could smell the whiff of char from my own doorstep, just as I did this week, as Kenyan soldiers fought for three days inside Westgate to kill the last assailants who had holed up in a supermarket. But what additionally unnerves us about this attack is that some of the killers may have escaped in the mayhem, dropping their guns, changing their clothes and simply walking away.

If there is another major terror attack here, it will be devastating. Kenya will be branded as insecure and expatriates will leave in droves. The billion-dollar tourism industry will crash, and everyone from pilots to safari guides to the maids at the wildlife lodges will be jobless. Tourists eager to see spectacular game and life-changing vistas will go to other African countries, and thousands of Kenyans will go hungry.

One thing that worries me is that while the Shabab have proved themselves a ruthless, wily enemy, Kenya has a profound disadvantage: it has never invested in its public safety. Crime is rampant here, and police officers are badly paid (about $200 a month) and often deeply corrupt. There is no 911 to call, and even if there were, it might not have mattered last weekend because most officers do not have cars.

But that didn’t stop plainclothes cops from flocking to the mall, from all directions, at the sound of the first gunshots, and they didn’t huddle outside calling for backup. They charged right in, cheap pistols against belt-fed machine guns, and several were cut down, but they pressed on, running out of Westgate with terrified children in their arms. Someone just sent me a picture of Westgate’s supermarket, a macabre image of six bodies slumped behind a deli counter, gallons of blood sloshed across the floor. Those were shoppers, not employees, and they had been hunted down in their hiding place. If the police officers hadn’t dashed in, the death toll would have been in the hundreds.

Kenya is a very frightened place right now. But it is still a beautiful place to live. In the hours after the massacre, so many Kenyans lined up to donate blood that some were turned away. People here pull for one another. And right now, more than ever, that is what we need.

Jeffrey Gettleman: On Reporting Somalia's Crisis

This week, New York Times correspondent Jeffrey Gettleman will receive a George Polk Award for being the first to report that the militant Islamist group al-Shabab had prevented starving people from leaving Somalia.

On Wednesday's Fresh Air, Gettleman, who has covered Somalia for almost six years, explains how he found out that al-Shabab, a militant group with ties to al-Qaida, first prevented Western food agencies from operating in their territories and then blocked escape routes to prevent people from leaving drought-inflicted areas of Somalia during a famine.

"I started working in refugee camps in Kenya, then I went to Mogadishu to where people were gathering and they just had these horrific stories about how they were starving to death, watching their children die of malnutrition and starvation and malaria and a lot of other diseases, and the Shabab was still refusing to allow any aid in," Gettleman tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross.

Tyler Hicks, a photojournalist for the New York Times, was near the Nairobi mall where gunmen opened fire and killed dozens of people on Saturday, and rushed to cover the attack.

Islamic militants attacked Westgate mall, killing at least 68 people and injuring over 100 others, according to the Red Cross Sunday afternoon. They are currently holding hostages there, and facing off with Kenyan police.

Hicks said he ran towards the mall on Saturday and began taking photos with a small camera. His wife Nichole Sobecki, also a photojournalist, later joined him to cover the news and brought professional equipment. They followed security forces into the mall, where the locations of militants were still unknown, to take pictures.

Almost half a million pounds of British taxpayer-funded aid and equipment has fallen into the hands of al-Qaeda, the Department for International Development has admitted.

It is no coincidence that David Cameron recently hosted a conference about Somalia in London which attracted heads of state and pledges of help from around the world.

The terror group’s Somali franchise, al-Shabaab, “confiscated” the equipment from DfID contractors in multiple incidents over at least three months before any action was taken.

The admission is contained in the small print of the department’s latest accounts, which say that £480,000 worth of “humanitarian materials and supplies” was written off following repeated “confiscations” by al-Shabaab.

Investigations by The Telegraph show a number of areas of questionable spending and results that are open to question, including how:

DfID refused to specify what the lost supplies were, but an aid industry expert said the value suggested a “huge amount” of material that could keep the terrorists going for a “fairly long time”.

Aid industry sources said dried foodstuffs of that value could feed 20,000 people for more than a year. “It is surprising that no action was taken, which suggests that, at best, DfID was asleep to the loss of its property and, at worst, that its local partners were colluding with the terrorists,” the aid expert said.

DfID said its contractors had “no prior warning of the confiscations” and therefore “no time to prevent the loss by relocating goods”.

The accounts show the confiscations took place between November 2011 and February 2012 and from multiple locations. It said an investigation was made into the losses but did not reveal the findings.

Last year, al-Shabaab threatened an attack on Britain that would “eclipse the horrors of 7/7 and 21/7 combined”. Several British citizens have travelled to train with the group.

Marc Rich, 'King of Oil' pardoned by Clinton, dies at 78


(Reuters) - Billionaire Marc Rich, who invented oil trading and was pardoned by President Bill Clinton over tax evasion, racketeering and busting sanctions with Iran, died on Wednesday in Switzerland aged 78.

Rich fled the Holocaust with his parents for America to become the most successful and controversial trader of his time and a fugitive from U.S. justice, enjoying decades of comfortable privacy at his sprawling Villa Rosa on Lake Lucerne.

Belgian-born Rich, whose trading group eventually became the global commodities powerhouse Glencore Xstrata, died in hospital from a stroke, spokesman Christian Koenig said.

At the cream-painted, red-roofed villa, with views of the nearby mountains and grounds sloping down to the banks of the lake, security guards and other staff could be seen but there was no sign of family members.

"He will be brought to Israel for burial," Avner Azulay, managing director of the Marc Rich Foundation, said by telephone. Rich will be buried on Thursday at Kibbutz Einat cemetery near Tel Aviv.

Many of the biggest players in oil and metals trading trace their roots back to the swashbuckling Rich, whose triumph in the 1970s was to pioneer a spot market for crude oil, wresting business away from the world's big oil groups.

To his critics, he was a white-collar criminal, a serial sanctions breaker, whom they accused of building a fortune trading with revolutionary Iran, Muammar Gaddafi's Libya, apartheid-era South Africa, Nicolae Ceausescu's Romania, Fidel Castro's Cuba and Augusto Pinochet's Chile.

In interviews with journalist Daniel Ammann for his biography, "The King of Oil", the normally obsessively secretive Rich admitted to bribing officials in countries such as Nigeria and to assisting the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad

Explaining Rich's route to riches in an interview with Reuters in 2010, Ammann said: "He was faster and more aggressive than his competitors. He was able to recognize trends and seize opportunities before other traders. And he went where others feared to tread - geographically and morally."

A U.S. government web site once described Rich more simply, as "a white male, 177 centimeters in height ... wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Customs Service and the U.S. Marshall Service." In 1983, he was on the FBI's 10 most wanted list indicted for tax evasion, fraud and racketeering. At the time, it was the biggest tax evasion case in U.S. history.

TRUST, LOYALTY AND SECRECY

Rich, who valued trust, loyalty, secrecy and persistence, always insisted he did nothing illegal and among those who lobbied Clinton on his behalf for his pardon were Israeli political heavyweights Ehud Barak and Shimon Peres.

On learning of the indictment plans, Rich fled to Switzerland to escape the charges, which included exploiting the U.S. embargo against Iran, while it was holding U.S. hostages, to make huge profits on illicit Iranian oil sales.

"Marc Rich is to asset concealment what Babe Ruth was to baseball," said Arthur J. Roth, New York state commissioner of taxation and finance.

He remained under threat of a life sentence in a U.S. jail until Clinton pardoned him during the last chaotic hours of his presidency, a move that provoked moral outrage and bewilderment amongst some politicians.

Rich's ex-wife, Denise, had donated funds for Clinton's presidential library. The former president later said the donation was not a factor in his decision and he had acted partly in response to a request from Israel. But he regretted granting the pardon, calling it "terrible politics."

"It wasn't worth the damage to my reputation," he told Newsweek magazine in 2002.

There was also scrutiny over the role of Eric Holder, now the attorney general and then a deputy attorney general who recommended the pardon.

Rudolph Giuliani, who had worked as a prosecutor on the Rich case before becoming New York Mayor, said in a statement: "Mark Rich committed serious crimes against the United States and then fled the country when he was called to account for his conduct. He should never have been pardoned."

"The fact that Bill Clinton and Eric Holder engineered a pardon for him - without input from me, as the U.S. Attorney who prosecuted him, or Janet Reno, as Attorney General, will forever be a blemish on our justice system," Giuliani said.
