In Roman society educated slaves were highly respected. There was also an Adult form of adoption where a Slave could
end up inheriting the owners estate. I still wouldnt want to be one though.

That's because it is both. Slavery was owned-by for seven years, according to the Law. It's what we have come to know as "indentured servants." And they got paid from their efforts, but only from their efforts. They were expected to bring something of value for the profit of the master, and out of what was brought, they got 10%. Easy doing if your duty was to farm. Grow a field of wheat and then harvest it, and you get 10% of the profit. A bit harder is you were a slave in the house. No one gets a profit for washing dishes, if they're a slave. But they could probably wash clothes or make clothes, so they could take in side work. Then they gave their master 90% of the profit.
After seven years, (or the year of Jubilee, whichever came first) the deal was renegotiated. Did you keep enough to go on your way? Were you healthy enough to support yourself? (Many slaves were family members who fell into hard times. Sometimes simply because they couldn't handle their own finances. Sometimes because they got hurt or disabled. Sometimes because they were old and their husbands died, so someone had to take care of them.)
If you chose to stay with the family then you were "branded" by drilling a hole in the ear for the earring. That was your pledge to stay with that Master until you died.
God drilled the hole in my ear by drilling his limbs onto a cross. I'm his slave for eternity.
Well if that's the case, why read the bible at all since we would understand nothing?
I think some masters were cruel to their slaves, so they were treated like a slave as we understand it.
Mat 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
Mat 20:26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
Mat 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
It would be wise of you to heed magenta's advise, as she got it from Jesus, who set the example.
Aren't the parents the chiefest in the home?
And don't they serve the children till they can take care of themselves?
Jesus is the greatest and chiefest of all, and if He came to minister and be a servant, then surely the parents should do no less.
