where should i start. i keep starting and not getting anywhere. >_<

i have books that start me off simple but my dad told me to just start learning chords and go from there? what did you start with? what worked for you and/or friends?

I reckon a great way to learn is from asking other brothers or sisters in church. I started off from there and personally find its a lot better having someone teach rather than learning from books (albeit not saying that the latter is not useful).
Start off with simple chords (i. e. G, D, E, C chords) until you get a feel for it, then move on to the more advanced techniques. All I can say is to practice lots, as with all other skill sets - and don't give up. :)
Oh yes, and have fun in the process too! :)

If you can afford lessons I say find a place that does good lessons for a good price. I've been learning how to play guitar for nearly five years...I love it!!!! :) :) I'm going to start violin soon, too!! I can't wait!
 
but I started off being classically trained (I read actual music notes) and so I did do it by books. But I had a piano background, so that helped alot.
