1. Being content is not something God gives us, but something we must learn and practice. If you asked God to help make you content, he would probably answer, “No, you make yourself content”. It is a matter of choice.
2. Be able to distinguish the things that are eternal from those things that are temporal. We really were created to live in the eternal future. Forever. This is only a part of your journey. You will never be content if your vision of your future only takes you to the end of your life here. Things will not be fair or as they should be while on earth. Yet all these obstacles and injustices are for our benefit. This calls for complete trust The next time you are discontented over an issue, ask yourself ford how long it will matter.
3. Develop a grateful attitude. It is impossible to be both grateful and discontented at the same time. That is why the Bible speaks so much about giving thanks always. Until you spend more time giving thanks than complaining, you will never be content.
4. Be content with who you are. God is working on you through many ways. Circumstances, people, studying his word and his presence. You are not the same person you were 10 years ago and you will not be the same person 5 or even 10 years from now. As long as you are making good choices, what you are is what you are. God is not finished with you yet.
5. Be content with the ministry that God give you or not gives you. We desire to make things happen, yet if they don’t, we aren’t satisfied. We want a higher call, better results. The more we sometimes achieve for God, the more we want to achieve. We only serve out of inspiration as God moves us – not our own motivation. God chooses what he wants to be glorified in, and the way in which he wants to do it.
In any discontentment, ask God for Him to talk to you about each one. You will see it from His perspective and receive some guidance. He always helps us go through anything that is difficult. He might give you some directions and even a word of encouragement. Listen for both.
