I went hiking today
Sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking a lake
Met a young woman named Sophie
She had a letter in her hand
I asked her to come sit with me
We talked for what seemed like hours
She told me about her lover who had passed
And how she'd like to join him
Going home, home to his arms
I didn't quite know what to say,
Didn't quite know how to comfort her
So I just listened
Sometimes that's just what a person needs
Is someone to listen
I asked her who the letter was for
She did not respond
Only looked out into the distance
After a while of silence
She got up to leave
And I told her,
"wait, do you want to grab a coffee?"
She said sure
So we hiked back down
She seemed to cheer up a bit
At times she was even laughing
When we got to the coffee shop,
Just a few blocks from the trail,
She paused for a moment in front of a garbage can
She tore her letter in two
And tossed it
I didn't ask any questions
Instead just followed her into the shop
We talked more while sipping lattes
I told her I had a great time talking to her
She said
I'm so glad I met you
And gave me a hug
