All Christians need to do is be “good” and act “nice.”
TRUTH__This bypasses the need for total dependency on the Holy Spirit and the gift of God’s grace. God wants us to know his Son and accept the work he did on the cross to bring us into salvation.
God wants you to be always happy.
TRUTH His purpose is to conform you to the image of Christ and let the life of Jesus be expressed through you. “For you have died and your life is now hidden in Christ.” Your focus is not on your own happiness, but on fulfilling God’s purpose for your life no matter what it brings (even persecution).
Just follow your heart.
TRUTH_ Jere. 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things. We are to follow the bible and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
If somebody hurts you, you have a right to get even.
TRUTH We are only to forgive remembering that God has forgiven you and does so continually. We are told to bless them and let God take care of the person’s heart.
You have to take care of yourself or nobody else will.
TRUTH God calls himself your provider and protector. He knows that you are unable to really take care of yourself.
“It doesn’t hurt anybody, so it isn’t a problem.”
TRUTH All sin hurts. If not someone else, it hurts you,.
“Nothing is more important than your family.”
TRUTH God is more important. Jesus said that sometimes it is necessary to leave “family” in order to do the will of God. And also said that the truth of the gospel would cause a division in the family. He also stated that we must love God more than family.
Education is the key to happiness and success.
TRUTH_ Ps. 16:11 You make known to me the path of life. In yur presence there is fullness of joy. God is the key to real happiness.
“You can’t help it – it’s just how you were raised (or just how you are).
TRUTH_ You are a new creature in Christ. You have a new spirit (the Holy Spirit). His life is now in you. You have a circumcised heart
“God must be punishing you for something you did (or didn’t do).
TRUTH Ro. 8:1 – There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Col. 2:13 – Jesus has wiped away our sins and we are forgiven.
I must work on my sins and become more holy.
TRUTH_ You will never be anything but unholy and sinful. Only Jesus has made you holy and pure in God’s eyes – his gift of his own righteousness. Jesus took care of your sins once and for all on the cross. You will change only as you keep your eyes on Jesus and become more intimate with him., not by being self-centered and taking your own spiritual temperature all the time.
The pastor (teacher) is always right.
TRUTH. We all (even pastors) are pilgrims and can only share what God has given us to understand. And we all see as in a glass darkly – not perfectly. Many wrong words have been taught by teachers and should encourage us to seek the scriptures for ourselves with the guidance of the Holy Spirit for understanding.
God controls every single thing that happens in life.
TRUTH . We have all been given free will, and God lets the consequences of our choices play out. He does intervene in our lives when we ask him to when it lines up with his purposes. Prayer combined with faith puts things under his control.
Christians should try and keep the law (10 commandments).
TRUTH_I Tim. 1:9-10. The Law is not for the righteous, but for the unrighteous. The law has never stopped people from sinning, only was meant to show people their need for a savior and His gift of grace and mercy. We must now walk by the Spirit through daily prayer and listening.
You must produce good fruit.
TRUTH. God does not want to see the fruit of YOU in your life. He wants to see the fruit of the Spirit. Our own fruit will never be good enough. We are told only to abide in the vine and he would put out His fruit through us.
God doesn’t care about the small details of your life.
TRUTH. Even the hairs on our head are numbered. You are called His child and His bride to show the intimate ways he cares for us. Every detail when he depend on him.
There are many roads to God through many religions.
TRUTH. Jesus said “I am the way and the truth. No man comes to the father except by me.” The only way is through the cross and the blood of Christ. All other roads are deceptive. And avoid the need for the sacrifice of Jesus.
I need to rid myself of certain behaviors and sins before I can be of use to God.
TRUTH You will never reach this goal. God uses imperfect vessels who are not prideful and feel ready. You only need to be willing and available and depend totally on the Holy Spirit’s ministry through you, not what you are able to do.
Church is not necessary – my religion is personal.
TRUTH . We all make up the body of Christ and when we isolate ourselves from the body, we are missing on much of what and how God wants to minister to us. He uses the body of Christians to speak/comfort/encourage/give physical expression to His nature and his fruits. We are told not to forsake the “assembling” of ourselves together.
God works to bring out your hidden potential.
TRUTH He wants you to die to self and release more of the Holy Spirit’s power, fruits and gifts to be expressed through you. It is all about HIM.
