"LOVE" What is it to You?

This post is not to have the definition of love. It is to express a doubt, may be a fear or simply something I have shockingly noticed.

Lately there is a Christian couple in their 60s seeking Divorce in court. one wants it, the other is refusing.

And we find it becoming normal to get divorce or even living programing it.

in our communities Most married people only have complains to give on their spouse.

Here is my point

Even among Christians we can still be unequally yoked

Because most Christian would say I begged him or her to stay but they left anyway.

It is not only about the married people, we find a fear of engagement in all relationships, we are afraid to make friends among believers, we live suspicious of brothers and sisters even among clergymen.

Now We have 3 kinds of love in our Bibles
Agape love
Eros love
Philus love (please correct my spellings)

Which one should a Christian adopt in a relationship and why?

Personally what is love to you?

The last time I checked "God is love" Can we say believers have put aside God in the relationships they have?

Sincerely, many may argue this but I don't think we are good examples to the World.

Please if I am wrong give me hope and correct me please.

I dream of a world where believers are singled out even as the early Church, as they act in love towards each other.

CS Lewis wrote a great book called the 4 loves which is well worth the read on this topic. And generally we need all 4 of them ( what Lewis called Affection, Friendship, Eros (romantic love), and Charity) in our relationships ( well romance only with the spouse / potential spouse).

Affection is the love that comes between parents and children, people and their pets, etc. It's the love of that which is comfortable, familiar, longstanding in our lives. It's related to nostalgia which is like an idealized form of affection.

Friendship is companionship in search of the same goal and the same truth. Lewis said that it was possible that every true friendship started with the words " you too, I thought I was the only one."

Romantic love well I don't pretend to actually understand that one, but apparently it involves wanting to be physically close and vulnerable or at least that's what I hear.

Charity is the love we extend when people are not being lovable and don't deserve it. The love for the things unlovable but desperately in need of love and hopeless if they don't get it. And it is also the love that is extended without thought of the return. And if you read the old KJV it's the type of love described in 1 cor 13

And love is all of those combined as necessary for whatever relationship you have. My love for pizza is mostly affection and the association of many happy times involving pizza. My love for my parents is partially affection, partially friendship, and some day as they decline it will probably be part charity as well. My love for my dog is mostly affection, maybe a little bit of charity at first, but I was able to see that she could be a good dog and was just in a tough spot.

And should I ever have that hypothetical significant other, well I'll need all 4 because I'd want to have some of the same interests and pursue them together like friends do; I'd want the affection levels where he's as comfortable to be around as my family or my dog, I'll need the charity because we're both gonna royally screw up and have bad days and need some love when we don't deserve it, and yeah that romance stuff would be nice too.

Love is sacrifice . Most of us don't want to do that , not even a little bit .

True love is self sacrifice. Without that, there is no love. Then it is "like".

I like flowers, chocolate, John Smith.... but would I sacrifice myself interest for them? Different story.

Paul told men to love their wives as Christ loved the church, and to not be bitter (sharp, harsh) toward them (Eph 5:25, Col 3:19). The word love (Agapao) is the root word for Agape.

The Gospels have numerous examples of how Christ loved the church. Jesus said there is no greater love than a person sacrifices their life for their friend (John 15:13). This is not only talking about in death, but in life, to sacrifice what we want for the benefit of others.

In biblical definition from the original middle east culture, "love" means to honor, to respect, treating somebody heavily. The romantic and erotic elements of it are a modern invention.

Could it because of internet, people don't meet in person anymore. No friendship even as regular people, then harder for life long marriages commitment.
