According to the Webster's Dictionary and many sources, lust is defined as a strong desire for something, like a wanting for something. Other sources even define lust as being the same as "coveting". For instance, many numerous religious teachings appear to refer to Matthew 5:28 as meaning that anyone who looks at a woman to covet and/or desire her (a strong reference to the 10th commandment) has committed adultery allready in his heart.

All too frequently people read words with a vague idea or a guided idea of its meaning, but not actually knowing the scope there of. It is always a very good practice to learn words' meanings and etymologies if possibe. If you are reading this, then you have the great advantage of using your search options for definitions and etymologies. The Internet is a great blessing for study....

I seem to notice the same thing. It literally seems that there are religious people who use "lust" as an umbrella term to include numerous things, other than the strong sexual desire, including but not limited to sexual fantasies and even sexual pipe dreams (even without the intent of actually having sex with that person). Hence, for those people, even masturbation is included under the umbrella.

according to the BIBLE lust is defined as:

lusting for flesh instead of be content with the manna God gave them:

Numbers 11
32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.
33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague.
34 And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.

Mark 4:19
And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

John 8:44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Romans 1:24
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Romans 1:27
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Romans 6:12
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

1 Corinthians 10:6
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

Titus 2:12
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

To desire, to covet and other synonyms are quite similar to the word, lust. In one version of the Word you will find lust, and in another covet. There may be other word choices in other versions, but for now here are two versions with examples of the two above cited word selections:

(Darby)
Ye lust and have not: ye kill and are full of envy, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war; ye have not because ye ask not.
(DRB) You covet, and have not: you kill and envy and cannot obtain. You contend and war, and you have not: because you ask not.

I hope this has been helpful.

Lust might mean several different things, but I think its most important meaning refers to carnal desire. We aren’t supposed to have carnal desire for people, outside of lawful marriage.

The word "lust" is used 53 times in the KJV. It MUST be taken in context. It does not always refer to sex.

Lust centers on covetousness, self-gratification without concern for others, selfishness, i.e. idolatry, materialism, sexual immorality. Lust wars against the soul as per 1 Pet 2:11 by averting appropriate decisions for instance Eve gave heed to the enticement from the devil due to lust of the flesh and eyes.
Rom 13:14 "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."
2 Tim 2:22 "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
1 Pet 2:11 "Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul."
