dont make a vow to God please. trust me on that.

big mistake.

take it from someone who had the habit of sayign "i swear" constantly. to God and people. only to go back on my word like the rat i am.
i will probably go to hell for that. but hopefully not. breaking promises to God is no joke. and ive done it so many times. i learned not to make promises anymore.

again, as I already stated, God does NOT want us make vows

you know why? there will be consequences when you do not keep them

a vow is like a sworn testimony or statement.

consult the Bible for the correct understanding

I provided what Jesus said about making vows...is there a reason you would ignore what Jesus said and just go and do the opposite?

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. Matthew 5: 33-37

the above are the words of Jesus

in the Old Testament, people did make vows, but Jesus taught that we should no longer do that

God takes vows seriously, so it is not advised to make them...

When you make a vow to God, do not be late in paying it; for He takes no delight in fools. Pay what you vow! It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
(Ecclessiastes 5:4-5)

often i wonder what will happen to me cause ive also made promises and not kept them. i was one of those guys who go around saying "i swear" like its nothing.
i learned to never promise anything to God again thats for sure.

but what will happen? anyone got biblical answers? we shall see. i hope nothing. thats my favorite

I do not like to make vows when it comes to living for God,for if I do not come through it is not good, but if I tried my best and failed, then I am off the hook, but still we should not make vows.

Like Jesus said do not swear for you do not have the power to make one hair white,or black, which means we might not come through on the promise as a guarantee seeing we are in the flesh.

Act 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
Act 2:45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

Act 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
Act 4:34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
Act 4:35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
Act 4:36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
Act 4:37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

When the Church started the saints would sell all their things that were not of a necessity, and the money was used to help the poor among them.

Many agreed to do this, which they could of not agreed to this, for God does not force us to help the poor.

Act 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
Act 5:2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
Act 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Act 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Act 5:5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
Act 5:6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
Act 5:7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
Act 5:8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
Act 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
Act 5:10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
Act 5:11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

Ananias, and Sapphira, agreed to sell all they have and help the poor to public witness, and to God,but withheld some of the money lying to God and were struck dead.

Had they said they did not want to sell their possessions, and give the money,or only give a certain amount of the money, they would of not been struck dead, for it was in their power to do what they wanted with their own,and the money of it if they sold it,for God does not force us to help the poor, and does not strike us dead if we do not,but they vowed to do it with the other saints, and lied about it to God.

So I do not like to vow to God when it comes to giving money for I do not want to not come through on it being a fault of my own,but if we did vow, which we should not,and tried our best and failed,it would not be a bad thing, except we should not vow regardless.

I believe the couple was an example for us and God is not dropping people dead today, for it would seem like quite a few people would be dropping dead, and what about all the people that say,God if you get me out of this situation I will go to Church, and they do not,or if you make my marriage work I will serve you,and they do not.

There is enough Scripture verses that discourage you from vowing to God... the story of Ananias and Sapphira is about lying to God, not vowing.

Thank You Sis for sharing this. GOD'S WORD is very clear concerning swearing. Obedience to GOD is better the sacrifices.

well you know, this is truly a very clear word. no opinions needed :o

Thanks!

not supposed to swear on anything either...like a 'stack of Bibles'

Let me assure you that you will NOT go to hell for that. The only thing that sends a person to Hell is rejecting Jesus' Lordship and forgiveness.

Lordship entails what? Following His instructions.. He's not a true Lord to you if you disregard His words.

ECC.. 5:4-5.
When you vow a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for He had no pleasure in fools:
pay that which you hast vowed.

Better is it that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.

GAL. 3:17.
And this I say, that the Covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the Law,
which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul,
that it should make The Promise of none effect.

HEB. 4:1.
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into His Rest,
any of you should seem to come short of it.

10:36.
For you have need of patience, that, after you have done The Will of God, you Might receive The Promise.

11PETER 3:9.
The Lord is not slack concerning His Promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward,
not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to Repentance.

13.
Nevertheless we, according to His Promise, look for new heavens and a new earth,
wherein dwells righteousness.

1JOHN 2:25.
And this is The Promise that He hath promised us, even eternal life.

How about swearing on the the Bible, in court?

Making a vow to God isn't the same with swearing. Unless you're in the court and that's the tradition, I wouldn't recommend swearing on the Bible or worse, on God, because it makes you look like a compulsive liar (exactly the opposite of what you want to convey).

Also, making a vow to God is not always about giving something to God, it can also be about giving up something that is bad for you and you want a strong motivation, so you promise to God never to do that thing again (my case).

And it's not a matter of heaven or hell. It's rather a matter of wisdom. It's not wise to make promises that you can't keep (especially to God).

Christianity means, among so many other things, FREEDOM. A responsible freedom, yes. So, what you do is between you and God.

that's right and I did think of that actually

I'm not sure you are still required to swear on a Bible though...seems that would offend alot of people these days

FYI, making vows in the OT or for that matter the world, meant swearing on something though. check it out.

since Jesus said do not swear by anything (which would be making a vow) I don't know why people seem to want to
go ahead and do it anyway

must be like telling a child not to touch the hot stove...or don't eat from a certain tree maybe
