Read 1 Thessalonians 5:23 & 1 Corinthians 2:11

Not everyone realises that at the deepest level, man is spirit. No, that does not mean he is God. It does reflect the truth that God made us in his image. We know that "God is Spirit" (John 4:24). So what does this mean for us now? The functions of the human spirit are not laid out in a nice neat list. We need to discern the scriptures and seek revelation from God. There is much said about the spirit of man in the Bible. To save space and time, I would refer those who want to know more of the Biblical basis to Watchman Nee's, "The Spiritual Man".

We need to back to the beginning for more understanding. Adam's fall is the place to start. We see both Adam and Eve standing before God as sinners. Yet God said that they would surely die on the very day that they ate of the forbidden fruit. We see Adam still thinking and still making decisions. He was still expressing emotion. So what died on that terrible day?

Adam died spiritually, not physically and not in the realm of the soul. We can see from this that death is fundamentally separation from God.

God is Spirit and those that worship God must worship in spirit and in truth. From this we can see that the spirit of man is where worship and fellowship takes place. The whole being is involved in worship, but the spirit is like the holy of holies in the temple. The temple, by the way, is a type of the temple of the believer. The body is like the outer court, which is open to the world, the holy place is like the soul and we've said about the spirit previously.

The spirit of man is also the place of the conscience. Why not the soul? I've yet to meet a person who does not believe that they are fundamentally good. Logic and reason are in the soul realm, as we shall see. But it takes only a word from the Holy Spirit to dispel the lies that keep unbelievers blind. People live with a burden of guilt. It is so much a part of them that they hardly notice it until they are convicted.

Intuition is also an aspect of the spirit. It is the place that God leads us and speaks to us. The word "intuition" does not appear in God's word. However, it is something that we can observe and experience. Children are intuitive by nature. Very often there is no reason for their like or dislike. My son, just 3, told me that he did not like a certain business. He had no knowledge of witchcraft, but that business was involved in the occult. There are countless examples of this.

Often, God's leading has no reason or logic attached to it. We often find out why God lead a certain way after the event. We may well find out that it would have been better to follow God's leading than to ignore i!

In the next post, we will look at the meaning of Hebrews 4:12. And if anyone believes that the spirit and the soul are inseparable, or the same thing (SDA teaching for example), this should convince them otherwise.

I wrote this a while ago. It seems germane to the topic:

While the Word and the Father attended creation (where everything that was made came through the Word) man was made with a current standard: "..in the image and likeness of the Word and Father."

Later, in Philippians, this is said about Jesus: "But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men..."

It seems that the order was reversed: Jesus took on the likeness of men.

It appears this this only works if the image and likeness of Word and Father have nothing to do with the flesh... because they are Spirit. Indeed, Adam and Woman only recognized their nakedness only after their identity switched from being "spirits clothed in flesh" (because their Father was a Spirit) to their flesh being their primary point of identity. Such a shift occurred when they ate the fruit to satisfy the lusts of their flesh.

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.”

In the Greek, likeness is homoiōma which seems to be related to identity.
And image is eikōn which seems to be related to character.

It would make sense that Jesus would have the identity of man (and man's weaknesses) without the flawed character of the sin nature.

BTW: I have many of Nee’s books. :)

Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Heb 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

1Co 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Mat 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

People are created soul, spirit, and body.

In the flesh dwells no good thing and is our choice to do what we want.

The spirit is our connection with God for He does not have a relationship with the flesh.

And the soul makes the decision which Paul said with his mind he serves Christ but with his flesh the law of sin.

The spirit goes back to God regardless of how the person acted on earth.

No person retains their spirit in the afterlife for the spirit and soul are separated.

The soul is what is saved having a glorified body.

The only thing that separates a man and a woman is the flesh for the spirit and soul are the same.

The glorified body is the same with no distinction between them.

Which is why Jesus said in heaven they do not marry for there is no more man and woman.

And they will be like unto the angels for the angels have no gender.

And they are known by masculine names for they are greater than people.

Which is why the Bible says Jesus was made a little lower than the angels according to the flesh.

But when the saints get to heaven they will be greater than the angels for the saints will have a glorified body like Jesus.

Which the angels desire to look in to the salvation of the saints.

All spirits go back to God regardless if the person believed the truth or not.

No person retains their spirit in the afterlife.

The spirit and soul are separated.

The saints will be a soul in a glorified body.
