I would stretch it further and say manipulation is witchcraft. The concept is to make people do things against their will if they were not under the spell of manipulation. Let me give an example of how we may see these techniques in everyday life.
The shopping centre...(Mall?) Manipulation can be found in operation in a few ways in the retail trade. A common way is via music. You head into a store with a small mental list of items you need. You go and buy those items and nothing else. Another time you go in and there is music that makes you feel happy and relaxed. Your body moves to the beat. Your mind is less focused on what you came in for and your countenance is lowered, so you buy things you would not normally have purchased. You have been under the spell of manipulation via the music beat.
Another scenario I saw in the last place I worked. A bicycle that normally retails between £250 and about £300 was introduced into the shop in a new colour as a limited edition. The normal coloured models were raised in price to the Max(£300). The new one came in and the price tickets we were given to put on the bike said "WAS £500. NOW HALF PRICE....ONLY £250".
Now this bike was never sold at £500 in our store and was never ever worth £500 in value. They used manipulative ways to make customers think they had a bargain!
