Proberbly never been cold enough in past. -26 is not normal.

We've actually had some of those around here. It sounded like a car ran into the side of the house, just a loud "boom". I had no idea what it was, it scared me though! My coworker had a few of them too. It's a real thing.

I saw a video of how the frost quakes occur.

I must say, I've lived in Edmonton over half my life, sometimes at temperatures of -60F or -51 C when I was young, and I have never heard of this. My son lived in Yellowknife for 14 years, where it is even colder, for longer and permafrost, and he has never heard of it either.

But it is interesting that climate warming may have caused this cold spell.

Actually we are doing well here in Alberta. Hanging around 0C. I just hope things don't go back to normal, and the cold returns here. (You know, the -40 C or F kind!)

around 5-6 years ago i was in east Texas,the temperature was 15-17 degrees at night for about 3 days,which is rare in Texas. it had rained a slow soaking rain the day the cold front first came in so the ground was saturated,on the morning after it fell to 15 degrees i went out at sunup to see if there was damage to h20 pipes ect. and there were "ice-cycles" that had formed coming "up",coming out of the ground about 2-3 inches tall. i didn't see them at first but i heard them crunching under my boots and thought it was the grass blades frozen,so i looked at them more closely. they were mixed with the soil,that is the ice had the dirt mixed into it. does this also happen in the northern states?,lol it's the first time i had ever seen it. it made me remember this reading the thread i suppose the ground is doing about the same thing there "freezing and forcing it's self apart"
