Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary contains the foundation of America's heritage and principal beliefs. It is contemporary with the American Constitution.

Marriage

(MAR'RIAGE, noun [Latin mas, maris.] The act of uniting a man and woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life. marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them. marriage was instituted by God himself for the purpose of preventing the promiscuous intercourse of the sexes, for promoting domestic felicity, and for securing the maintenance and education of children.)

A marriage is a covenant agreement between God, the couple, and the people who witnessed it.

Marriage contract defended in the civil arena is for one purpose. The promoting of healthy families. Healthy families equals healthy societies and healthy families stabilizes the fertility rate.

Marriage contract defended in the religious arena. A Biblical worldview also sets the best standard to have healthy families.
Giving the family a objective morality and clear line between right and wrong promotes law abiding citizens under a judicial system already structured around the Biblical morality. Taking the Biblical concepts and each individual applying those concepts while both are seeking obedience in the Lord will create strong marriages as defined or even fix the most broken of marriages.

Even the non religious marriages have to steal the God ordained Biblical concepts in order to have a healthy marriage without giving credit to the designer.

Divorce in early America was extremely difficult to achieve while in comparison divorce today is fairly easy to achieve. But this is difference in culture. The family was once protected by the Government but now we have a Government that is breaking the family.

A great book to further understand the idea behind some of this post is a book called Stealing from God: Why Atheists Need God to Make Their Case [Frank Turek, Ravi Zacharias]
