Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.

Jesus was speaking to those under the kingdom gospel offer tot he nation of Israel. This was perhaps in preparation for the tribulation or time of Jacob's trouble that would follow the nation receiving her Messiah.

There is a roughly parallel verse for those Christians today under the grace gospel.

2Ti_3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

The Greek word translated "persecution" mean to be put to flight. One would expect there to be opposition from the world (that Satan sets the course of (Eph 2:2) to those attempting to shoe the selfless love of Christ-likeness.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 13:20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

Luke 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

1 Peter 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you.

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

Of course the saints are going to be persecuted for the world operates by arrogance and self exaltation to put forth their ways.

But blessed are those who endure persecution and claims the truth and Jesus and does not hide it.

Some people might not want to claim Christ around people or certain people for they do not want backlash verbally or physically and do not want to be mocked.

Persecution tries our faith and when we do not deny Christ can be a testimony to the world which some might consider.

If we do not proclaim Christ during whatever is happening in our life for we do not want backlash and for people to think strange about us then we are ashamed of Christ.
