Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

One of the most comforting scripture passages.

Thats so cool! I was just pondering this verse a couple days ago. I truly believe this verse can be taken two ways:

In the direct context, I beleive Jesus was speaking both to the house of Judah and the lost house of Israel. Since His mission at this time was to unite them unto Himself, He was showing them that the man-made traditions that the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Torah experts of the land enforced, were more burdensome than anything God originally commanded them in Torah. By adding all these man-made rules that were being held as if equal to God's word, the people would naturally become worn thin, but Jesus was trying to show them that this was not the will of the Father. My favorite example of the extra commands of man, are the ways the Pharisees tried to "accuse" Jesus of breaking the Sabbath according to their man-made traditions and laws. As we know, Jesus never sinned, so He dismantled their false teachings to restore the people under the true way the Sabbath was to be observed.

The other context I beleive, is a calling for all mankind to turn to Jesus instead of chasing man-made doctrines and religions in the futile pursuit to save one's own life. I even like to think of the fact that there is no need to try and impress others by doing x,y z thus wearing yourself thin. Serving the LORD (YHVH) alone is enough to give us favor in the eyes of God (the most important) and in the eyes of man (according to His will)

Ever have a bad day, bad week, bad situation and everything about it is horrible and no end in sight and no way to fix it?

Then you get a thought about some Scripture or Verse you know or have recently read and suddenly the horrible bad situation doesn't seem so bad any more?

That's what I think about whenever I think about Matthew 11:28-29.

REST is one of the dearest and most precious benefits of being a believer who abides in Jesus.

In the Old Testament they could not have the Spirit like the New Testament for their sins were not completely taken away so they were not a clean vessel.

But the blood of animals covered their sins but there was a remembrance of their sins every year which their sins had to be covered again.

So in the Old Testament they could not have peace that passes all understanding, joy that no person takes away from you, and spiritual rest, the benefits of having the Spirit.

Also in the New Testament it is a spiritual sabbath by the Spirit.

Isaiah 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

Isaiah 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

Isaiah 28:12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Jesus took the physical ordinances of Israel out of the way nailing them to His cross for they were contrary to us for they had no bearing on salvation.

And was a shadow of things to come.

So let no person judge you concerning the physical ordinances including the physical Sabbath days.

Some people say keep the physical sabbath but it is a spiritual sabbath and they will not hear.

The physical ordinances and physical laws do not mean anything in the New Testament.

Love is the fulfilling of the law which no person can obtain that without the Spirit guiding them.

That is why Jesus said He gives us rest for in the New Testament that rest is available by the Spirit where in the New Testament it was not being a physical covenant.

We are born slaves to sin and satan, who through Christ has been given the ability to choose our master. We can remain in service to sin and satan. or we can choose to turn from our old master and serve Christ as our new Lord. this passage in mat 11 is our potential New master telling us that His 'Yoke' is easy (Yoke being a work harness for oxen) and His burden (Work load) is light.

...Or we can remain in servitude to sin and satan.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

It's still a burden, it's still a yoke!

It's still a burden, it's still a yoke!
So?

Yoke = harness that enables us to share the work. It prevents from one person working harder than another.

Burden = responsibility, task, work load.

This passage is telling us we will have jobs, and community/others to help us to complete these tasks.

That was for those who think work and effort aren't part of the salvation process.

Burden in the Greek: 922- load, abundance, authority. 1117-cargo , wares or freight. 2599- to be a burden. 5413- burden task or service.

Yoke in the Greek: 2201- team. 2218 - a coupling, yoke.

A life in Christ doesn't eliminate the yoke or the burden, He shares it with us.

Who said anything about salvation? The work I am talking about clearly goes on through out the rest of eternity.

which is different that what I said?

TOJ #71: Jesus calls everyone to come to him and to learn from being yoked with him, which is as easy as an act of will. [Matt. 11:28-30] Those who learn to be gentle and humble in heart like Jesus will find rest for their souls, because his yoke is light.

Perhaps the yoke analogy is comparable to that of the one set of footprints in the sand: I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and when I looked back at the footprints in the sand, I noticed that at the lowest and saddest times in my life, there was only one set of footprints, and I questioned the Lord about it, saying “Lord, during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints, and I don’t understand why you would leave me. The Lord replied, “My child, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”
