After Jesus took his last breath and died on the cross, it says that the Holiest Place in the Temple was split apart from top to bottom and the earth shook, and rocks broke, and tombs opened, and many godly men and women who had died came back to life again. After Jesus' resurrection, they left the cemetery and went into Jerusalem, and appeared to many people there.

Did they ever return to the tombs? Did they go straight up to heaven? Does it say what happened to them?

Thanks.

No, it does not, say, a good ? that only Father and Son that won for us knows. Entertain people, you never know if you might be entertaining Spirits of Father here on earth, reaching out
Yet please ask for the discerning of Spirits from Father to know truth about this
Matthew 10:16-20 Luke 21 :14-15. Ultimately I see it is between Father and me to see and hear
To know the voice as Jesus said "my sheep, know my voice"
If know not yet know, trust to know, even it takes a while, to continue to trust no matter what, is when one eventually sees the truth of it all and becomes content in all things good or bad, to me at least after. a long walk here on earth off a short pier daily
God won for everyone to choose to believe God or not in risen Son for them to love all and not a few anymore all!

This is Barnes notes on this

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
And the graves were opened - "Graves" or sepulchres were most commonly made, among the Jews, in solid rocks or in caves of rocks. The rending of the rocks, therefore, would lay them open. The graves were opened by this earthquake, but the dead in them did not rise until after his resurrection.
And many bodies of the saints arose - Of course, it is not known who these were, nor what became of them. It is probable that they were persons who had recently died, and they appear to have been known in Jerusalem; at least, had the ancient saints risen, they would not have been known, and would not so soon have been credited as those who had recently died.

Which slept - Which had died. The death of saints is often called "sleep," Daniel 12:2; 1 Corinthians 15:18; 1 Thessalonians 4:15.

Its an ancient idiom of speech similar to a "frog in my throat".
If I say the idiom with a frog nobody assumes I am choking on an amphibian....even if I'm eating the southern delicacy of fried frog legs. Everyone knows I've either got a cold or allergies.

This particular idiom of speech refers to the immense size of Jesus's "Spirit" that was entering the "abode of the dead" or Sheol.

Matthew 27:52
and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

the only place this is said is in Matthew's report

I believe that happened, and they went into town and told of the risen Christ
Who they were, was the dead bodies of the Saints, matters not to me to do any extrapolation from the "Cliff note" given to me anyways. As gets done in verses given and not seen the entire Chapter. God loves us all, proven in Son is risen to me anyways.
Where any new life begins in anyone that decides to believe God, stands in that no matter what troubles come at them will eventually see it and this can take a lifetime here on earth. Will we go the distance and not quit?
These see, those that will not quit belief to God and Son as Won (One) for them
Will we each give all we got as told by Jesus to the disciples in Luke 21:1- to the end of that chapter seeing this , verses 14-15, after seeing that woman that Jesus used as was the one giving more that the other one?
God knows, I believe God over everyone else and anything else, Thanking Christ is risen where new life is given from God Father of risen Son to me anyways, now y'all too

Luke 16 tells the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. They both died and went to paradise, the rich man on one side of the gulf and Lazarus on the other side. Eccl 12:6-7 tells us that when we die, our spirit returns to the Father who gave it. God is the Father of the living, not the dead. When Christ died on the cross, God allowed the spirits of those souls that passed on to leave paradise and appear on earth to those that knew them. This was a one time event to document that Christ had risen from the dead. After their appearance, those souls retuned to paradise from where they had come. To the people it appeared that they had come out of their graves, but in reality they came from above.

After Jesus took his last breath and died on the cross, it says that the Holiest Place in the Temple was split apart from top to bottom
It was the curtain that was torn, the curtain that separated the earthly dwelling place of God’s presence from the rest of the temple where men dwelt. Only the high priest was permitted to pass beyond this veil once each year to enter God’s presence for all of Israel and make atonement for their sins. The tearing of the veil at the moment of Jesus’ death dramatically symbolized that His sacrifice, the shedding of His own blood, was a sufficient atonement for sins. It signified that now the way into the Holy of Holies was open for all people, for all time, both Jew and Gentile. The things of the temple were shadows of things to come, and they all ultimately point us to Jesus Christ. He was the veil to the Holy of Holies, and through His death the faithful now have free access to God. more here.

They both died and went to Sheol. Only Lazarus was in paradise (Abraham's' bosom).

It was fulfillment of prophecy to israel for when the messiah came to them it will happen again at the end of our covenant when he returns

prophecy about 700 bc

“Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.”
‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭37:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

fulfillment after he rose up

“and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭27:52-53‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It doesn’t say where they went specifically but there’s nothing to suggest they died again or returned to thier graves and there’s much to suggest they entered the kingdom of God by tbier spirit with Jesus

bit when he returns it’s going to happen again a second resurrection

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4:16‬ ‭

i believe those people nes you mention are the first resirrection based in the first covenant promises of a resurrection

the moment of Jesus’ death dramatically symbolized that His sacrifice, the shedding of His own blood, was a sufficient atonement for sins.
What! Not atoned for in my honest given sight given me to see it as done by Son for me and all others as well
That was the taking away of sin, once and for all. No more once a year Atoning, that is finished we are reconciled. Jesus took away the sin of the world at that cross in his one time willing death. That is finished. We all are reconciled as forgiven from God Father of Son Jesus for us all to now go the most Holy Plasce and have a conversation with Father. Jesus paved the way for each and every person to now go in by belief and ask Father, for this new life offered in God's Spirit and Truth (The Holy Spirit) Father's Spirit that led Jesus

Yet, people say this to that, Sin is not gone, look around it is all over this world still, it is not taken away, it is only atoned for, not gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So we, at least me ended up in trying to get more forgiveness, when that issue is taken care of by Jesus once and for all.
Sorry, yes it is, from my Daddy''s sight it is gone, Jesus took it all upon himself, the torn curtain is proof, we the people can now enter in and have conversation with our friend the Father of the risen Son. Jesus, who separated sin and death period, What? Yes it is done, Next, new life in the risen Son Jesus to get given to the next one that decides to believe. Gets Sealed in the Holy Spirit to see it and continue in or change their mind and quit trying in belief to see it, taking too Long, giving up as no way are good enough, as religion teaches we are to be good enough or we not in, talk about condemning reality. I am condemned and am thankful now, because I need God to lead through me and be new in trust the trust fund given me, anyone else?
Yet this is not seen by those not yet born again as new in Father and Son in Spirit and Truth. Son had to reconcile everyone first before any new life could get given to anyone ever

therefore. once anyone believes God in risen Son for them from Daddy's view Daddy has got you safe and secure in his love and mercy for us all to be new in love and mercy to all, yes even those that do not believe yet or might not ever however it is done on that cross once for all
Time to change the old mindset to the new Heart given set, thanks

To answer your question, no, it doesn't say what happened to them. Any theory is just speculation or educated guess.
