Religious and Spiritual Factors in Depression: Review and Integration of the Research

The majority of studies (61%) find less depression or faster recovery from depression for those who are more R/S or a better response to an R/S intervention compared to other treatments or controls. Even a higher percentage of studies (75%) find inverse relationships between R/S and suicide attitudes, attempts, and completed suicide, and <3% find the opposite. Why is this so? We already discussed the possibility that R/S involvement may help persons to cope better. This has been reported in hundreds of both quantitative and qualitative studies where individuals enduring stressful life circumstances are asked what enables them to cope with the stress.

There is a connection when people at least respond to the knowledge of God and or practice the act of worship. This may not secure salvation to just respond or worship anything outside oneself or a higher being. Still, by responding to the urge to acknowledge a supreme being who created us with the desire to worship, we get a glimpse of healthier living.

For a complete picture of this and not just a glimpse, we see this healing through Jesus Christ. We see salvation and freedom from all other systems that demand legalism as advertised for redemption—a burden with such weight that no one can bear. We know a peace beyond understanding that comes from living in harmony with the Spirit and wisdom of God.

I couldn't agree more. The more intertwined and dedicated to the Lord we are, the less likely we will desire to take our own life. In fact, I can testify that if I had not been Indwelt Powerfully by the Holy Spirit (in a physically, measurable way), I would have killed myself in these last five years. The amount of suffering that I have endured at the hands of my family and former friends . . . has been beyond shocking.

After my Powerful Indwelling, I realized how necessary it was that I study the Word of God and for the first time, REALLY come to know who He is through the entire body of His written Word. Having recognized His Almighty Power as the Old Testament expresses so clearly, and after realizing that the entire book revolves around Circumcision of the Heart, I can now see that the only reason for why I have endured is because the Lord has Enabled me to do so.

2 Peter 1:4 NLT - "And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world's corruption caused by human desires."

Romans 2:29 NLT - "No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by God's Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people."

Anyone struggling with life would do well to listen to Jeff Allen's testimony. He's a well known comedian, who was an atheist.

Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden. He was good, but he was incomplete. That's why there were two special trees, one the tree of knowledge of good and evil and the other the tree of Life.

God's intent was that Adam should be completed by eating from the Tree of life. We know the sorry story. The tree of knowledge did not complete Adam. He remained empty and unfulfilled. And every single person is born empty and unfulfilled. Some are driven to despair by this lack of meaning to life. As Thoreau said, most people live a life of quiet desperation.

Even the rich, successful and famous suffer. How many get to the height of their profession and find out that it is meaningless? How many get so depressed that they drink or drug themselves to death or just suicide? Way too many. Nothing can fill the void in man's heart except Jesus.

Most Christians, if they witness at all, focus on sin. Yes, that is the reason why we are cut off from God. But many people are seeking meaning in life. Christians alone know the true meaning of life. We should be a beacon of peace and joy to those who are suffering such pain in their hearts that they cannot carry on. Not all will accept Christ. Marylin Monroe told Billy Graham that she did not need his Jesus. A week later, she was dead. But we at least can let people know that there is hope, meaning and purpose in life - Jesus.

Many believers will testify to the sense of fulfillment when they received Christ. I was a suicidal, depressed drunk until Christ found me. Thanks be to God. I would not be here but for His mercy and grace.

What a, wonderful testimony. I whole heartedly agree, salvation is about saving people from what really makes them suffer, not just accusing and forgiving of sin. We all need freedom from the horrible secular life, and experience the peace and joy of true salvation, life in abundance with Jesus ❤️
