Memorial Day

In all honesty I hate war. I feel like a lot of wars these days are due to the selfishness of politicians. I hate how certain holidays glorify America. Yeah we have a great country but we're not perfect. We have a pretty bad history tbh. :'(

My family and I just drove by a display of flags put there by families of those who have died in the war. My mom said, "Doesn't it give you goosebumps?"

I kinda shrugged. I felt more uncomfortable and sad if anything. On Memorial day everything is decked out in red, white and blue. I feel like black would be more appropriate. Instead of an air of national pride and honoring the dead I feel like we should go in to a country wide state of mourning. Nothing is going to repair those families. No amount of honor is going to fill the gap that war ripped in their lives.

My parents got mad at me because I was trying to explain my side and it kept coming out wrong and then my dad yelled at me which triggered my PTSD so now I'm sitting at my grandpas trying not to have a melt down.
 
You are young and I am old. We defeated Hitler and through some wars protected our country.

My uncle stepped on a landmine and got killed during WW2. He left a young baby and wife. So, yes, he hated war, too, just as you do. But he did the right thing at the time. And I am glad that there is a day to remember those who gave their lives so that we can be safe.

I'm glad there's a day to remember too. I just wish our attitude towards the whole thing was more...sad as opposed to "let's cook out and put up flags!" I wish we could mourn for our loss together and really THINK about the HIGH HIGH cost of war. Does this make sense?

Purpose of American Wars:
Gulf War II: To stop terrorists from mounting an army to attack America, England, Spain, and a few other countries.

Gulf War I: To stop a crazy man from taking over Kuwait, where his army killed civilians after raping the women.

Bosnia-Herzegovina: To stop another crazy man from committing genocide on a large group of people.

Falkland Islands: To protect American students in a American University from getting caught in the crossfire between the UK and Argentina over whose island that belongs to.

Vietnam: To stop communism from taking over the world (by request of the people in that country who really didn't want to be communists.)

Korea: To stop communism from taking over that country (a problem caused by not dealing with that after WWII.)

WWII: To stop two crazy men from taking over the world, to stop genocide of the Jews, to stop mass murder of artists, intellectuals, and Christians, and to stop Japan from taking over China.

WWI: (never did figure out that one. I blame it on transferring from one school to another every year in high school, but, honestly? By now, if I were truly interested, I could learn about the cause of that one.)

Civil War: Caused by the Founding Fathers never dealing with the issue of slaves, but also to stop the US from splitting apart.

How far back do I take this, because I have a question for you? Which one of those fights was a bad idea? Each war has a cause, and effect few want to live with, and they're all fought by too-young men for the purpose of protecting our country.

In the belief we are our brothers keeper, I also think we should go into a few countries in Africa to stop that stupid notion that little boys are solider and slaves to use as miners, I truly believe we shouldn't have left Iraq or Afghanistan, because we're doing the same stupid thing we did back in the 80's, leaving the door wide open for other crazy men to commit more mass genocide and choke freedom out of the lives of every citizen in those countries, to do the same thing to the idiot in North Korea that we did to Qaddafi, to free quite a few other countries in Asia Minor and northern Africa, and then consider freeing quite a few countries in Central and South America, because freedom is a wonderful thing, but there's nothing in it for the US to do that.

Those soldiers? They believed enough in their country to give the ultimate sacrifice. Others still live with the scars. I was a teen during VN. Hubby (before he was hubby) was a sailor. He got spit on when he came home, and he didn't even do his job anywhere near Vietnam.

We SPLIT on people for taking care of us and giving us the right to split on them. 'bout time this country gave back to those who fought hard so we can dicker on the Internet freely. Without them, you and I would be dead, because Hitler really didn't care for anyone unless they were the right gene pool with no disabilities. That was the world of his dreams, so if no one fought...
 
I see where you're coming from. It's a completely secular holiday, so you shouldn't feel the need to celebrate something the same way as everyone else... or at all. Lots of people get offended when you don't praise or show support for the country. That's the way every nation and empire has been. But I think people would rather celebrate than morn, which is why Memorial Day isn't too solemn.
 
Memorial Day is not about celebrating war...........goodness.

Memorial Day is about paying due respect to every man and woman who had the courage and the desire to step forth and serve their Nation when their Nation called.

Before folks get all weird about Memorial Day, maybe they should take a step back, look around, and then be very, very grateful to these men and women.............because EVERYTHING WE HAVE TODAY is because of their sacrifice.

People will go on and on for years over some animal (pet) who was the love of their life, so why in the world would anyone even hesitate to recognize the purpose of Memorial Day?

don't believe everything you here about our history. most of it is told from a very liberal anti-American point of view . no, we are not perfect, and have some no good periods of time, but just be careful what you believe!!
 
Politics aside, as an honorably discharged veteran who had friends in the military die in service it's a glorious day not a dark one as the OP of this thread asserted for the simple fact that we and our deceased friends successfully defended the U.S. to the present in a very fallen world. You are welcome. EOM.

Interesting. I agree to a point; mourning isn't going to repair said families either.

If only we took better care of our vets and their loved ones...
