I have worked with kids on the spectrum for years and have courses and training in the field, with qualifications that obtained at North Carolina UNC at Chapel Hill as well.
I think the google response you shared earlier (it looks like it was quoted from another post and doesn't copy in replies, but I'll try to screen shot it) is a decent summary for starters.
And while I think this is a decent summary, I also think it hardly begins to scratch the surface.
I don't think it is a made up situation for money gains, though I certainly do think there are plenty of persons/organizations that try to profit from it.
And I don't think it is something 'new'.
