Hi JD, it's a rare endocrine disorder, which even a lot of doctors don't know
a great deal about. My own family doctor had to research as he had not come
across someone with it before.

The following link might help though. :)

In theory it is helpful to eat a high calcium low phosphate diet, but that
is very hard as many foods with calcium also contain phosphates.

Because it took some time to get a diagnoses and gradually bring my calcium
levels back within the normal range i experienced many problems for a year
or two, including that I started to develop the first signs of cataracts - some
cloudiness of the lens. Fortunately that has not got any worse to date.

Things like stress and exercise also increase the calcium requirement.
Ps if I keep taking the tablets and remember to milk the cow regularly
I'm ok. (That's a joke we don't have a cow, but maybe I should buy one).

I was thinking of something Miri, if your taking calcium supplements, powerful prescription supplements no less, why do you even need diary?

Also, here are a few things I can say before I even speak to my friend. I have enough medical knowledge that I can state some things about what is going on with you with confidence.
If your thyroid has shrunk to the point where it is not productive, then no amount of any lifestyle change I am aware of is going to help you.
Second, you may have had, actually probably had, a issue when you stopped drinking milk and/or eating diary not because of low calcium levels, especially if your taking prescribed supplements, but because of what I mentioned in my post earlier today; you were beginning to detox from all that diary.
Third, this is a general statement, but it probably applies to you. Animal products such as milk, dairy, meats, etc usually contribute to and exacerbate health issues. You are almost definitely in this category.

I should have 2 of the tablets each day, but too much and they
give me an upset stomach so 1.5 of the tablets each day on a
regular basis is about as much as I can tolerate. So I would
prefer to make up the difference with diet.

The calcium tablets include Vit D and there is no Vit D deficiency
involved.

The original problem was Graves' disease due to an auto immune
disorder, which then effected the parathyroid glands. Also
probably due to an auto immune disorder.

On the plus side my immune system is brilliant, I have never
ever ever had the flu, I rarely get colds. The last cold was at least
two years ago. I can categorically state that as I am a carer for my elderly
aunt and she has been in and out of hospital a lot over the last few years.
Im the only one who has been cold free and therefor able to visit her every
week.

In March every single person in my office (15 other people) came down
with some sort of bad cold/flu like virus and they all ended up having at least
2 days off each. There was lots of sharing around of cold remedies that month.
It never touched me at all. Lol super immune system :)

I've never had any of the usual childhood ailments like measles, rubella, etc.

Thyroid problems run in the family but I'm the only one with a parathyroid issue.
My thyroid gland works fine now and I don't need meds for that.
The parathyroid glands have a completely separate unrelated function, they just
happen to be situated within the thyroid gland.

As I say I was just curious what other source of calcium you use equivalent to
the recommended adult intake, if you take dairy out of the equation.

I don't even really pay attention to how I get my calcium anymore. I did in the beginning when I started this, but that was long ago. After about 3 or 4 blood works, over maybe 10 years, my numbers all looked good, so I kind of just stopped paying attention.
A lot of beans have calcium, Northern beans are relatively high in it. So are Turnip greens, and dark leafy veggies are decent, if not always high, in calcium and low in phosphorus. Fennel has a decent amount, if you like it.
I talked to my friend. He said that yeah, as long as your thyroid has not shrunk to the point where it is not producing, you may have a chance for some slight or even dramatic improvement.
He said also that yes, your body is probably so accustomed to dairy, judging by what you wrote on the post, that you were going through something akin to withdrawal/detox when you stopped consuming it.
Good alternatives would be fermented goats or sheep cheese or goats or sheep's milk in the raw.

I know your probably not interested, but my doctor friend is a Christian, I told him you were a Christian, and he said if you were interested in exploring, you could call him, he won't charge you for the first call, and after speaking to you he will get a more specific idea of what is going on with you and tell you if he can help or not. Again, I know you probably are not interested, no worries, I am just putting it out there.

God bless you in this journey of spirit and health.

It's not a thyroid problem. The para thyroid consists of several tiny glands
which just happen to sit within the thyroid gland, so their ability to
function is not based on whether your thyroid gland is shrunk or not :)
They get easily confused by a lot of people including doctors who don't
seem to know much about them. The only ones who seem to have a clue
are endocrinology specialists. I have had to do a lot or research myself
as for a few years, I did not even have a name to put the the specific
condition.

So for example if someone had to have their thyroid gland removed, say
for example if they had thyroid cancer, then the surgeon tries to
keep at least some of the para thyroid glands in situ, so they can continue
their specific role. They function independently of the thyroid gland.

Anyway thanks for the offer, I think I will give it a miss. The phone call to
America would be rather expensive ;)

i could not risk reducing my calcium levels, as I say I already have some
cloudyness of both eye lens due to poor calcium levels when first diagnosed.
Long them it can cause osteoporis if calcium levels are not kept stable,
short term various other systems appear.

I might look at alternative calcium sources, though the difficulty would be the
quantity of calcium.

I know that some here think I am trying to push this down peoples throats (pun intended). I am not. I am trying to get people to consider a different perspective on food and lifestyle and how it dramatically effects out health.
All I am really asking is for people to not take my word, but take ownership of their health, their bodies, be proactive, do some research and see if the standard American diet is causing a lot of health problems.
Can't have a nutrition diet without having something about americans when we aren't even number one.

I was deemed over weight and I use to run 20 miles a day before I got hurt.
