Millionaire gay couple the Drewitt-Barlows have confirmed they have launched a legal challenge to the right of churches to opt out of gay weddings.

In fresh comments published by the Chelmsford Weekly News in the U.K. today, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow said legal action had started.

“We’ve launched a challenge to the government’s decision to allow some religious groups to opt out of marrying same-sex couples," he said.

“We feel we have the right as parishioners in our village to utilize the church we attend to get married.
“It is no reflection on our local church, who have been nothing but supportive towards us. We understand their hands are tied by a higher group of people within the church.”

Earlier this month, Drewitt-Barlow said he and his civil partner, Tony, would go to court to force gay weddings on churches.
He said at the time, “The only way forward for us now is to make a challenge in the courts against the church.
“It is a shame that we are forced to take Christians into a court to get them to recognize us.”
He added, “It upsets me because I want it so much—a big lavish ceremony, the whole works. I just don’t think it is going to happen straight away.

“As much as people are saying this is a good thing, I am still not getting what I want.”
A government bill legalizing same-sex marriage in the U.K. cleared Parliament earlier this year, and the first same-sex weddings are expected in 2014.

The legislation allows churches to opt out of performing gay weddings, and it specifically protects the Church of England.
However, top human rights lawyer Aidan O’Neill says protection for the Anglican Church is “eminently challengeable” in court.
A copy of O’Neill’s legal advice was sent to the prime minister in January, but Mr. Cameron nevertheless proceeded with the legislation.
 
Marriage is a religious commitment of a couple with God. A religious institute is a witness to it. So why would a gay couple want to get anywhere near this ? I would have thought you would have to drag a gay couple, who want to get married, to a church.

At one time perhaps. But, considering how far the church has wandered away it should be no surprise that many churches are becoming complacent.

so now they're forcing us to compromise our beliefs, just like they claimed happened to them? i'm having a hard time sorting out who the bullies are...

I beg to differ. A marriage is only a religious commitment to those who are religious. Atheists, who lack religion, can get married and yet you're not complaining about their marriages. Now don't get me wrong I think what this couple is doing is wrong and no church should be forced to marry anyone, but Christians do not have the sole claim to marriage.

I also would like to remind everyone that one couple does not represent a whole group of people.

Why is a, I guess christian? church supporting their homosexual relationship? I say let that church marry them...they are not christian

This is like stores with signs saying no shirt no shoes no service, and some guy comes in wearing only shorts and wants to be served...well duh!!!

This is not about rights ( nothing in the homosexual agenda is ). This is an attack on christian principle.

Funny I thought we lived in a country FOUNDED on religious freedoms!! Ask those early settlers why did they come here? Religious freedom.

Guess the foundations of our country mean nothing when you can get votes by creating false victimhoods.

A church is a place that belongs to God, not to the government. It's rule and regulations are written in the bible, not in a government constitution. In the rules and regulations written in that bible it is basic that men cannot be united to men and women can not be united to women. If freedom to have churches except under government rules rather than God rules is taken away from us, it would be a terrible thing.

Demons try to change the rules of the bible. They give the rule of love, of not judging, they try to change many things in the bible so the rule of who can marry can be overlooked. We, of the church, cannot allow them to do that. It would be giving up our right to follow God in a special place.

This particular couple was in Britain. But I agree, forcing a church to marry you after having gained marriage rights is the epitome of hypocrisy. The couple doesn't care about fairness, just getting what they want.

this has been planned since WW2.

it's not about homosexual rights, it's about the demoralization of Christianity. nothing else.

at first glance i would agree with the poster who said - go ahead - the church they attend isn't christian anyway.....but that's not the point.

the point is getting to the true christian churches through these apostate fakers.

The atheist I know would never go to a church to get married. Usually after a long period of being in a defacto relationship, they marry in a park or whatever. It is called marriage for want of a better word.

My point wasn't about who would and would not attempt to have a church wedding, but rather you made it out like only Christians have the right to get married as marriage is a religious ceremony. As I said it is only religious for those who are religious. Of course the atheist wouldn't go to a church to get married when they believe in no God. However, a lot of homosexual people believe in a god. I'm not saying they believe in the Christian God or that believing in a god gives them the right to force any church to marry them. I think what would have been wise for this couple to have done was found a church that coincides with their beliefs and would eventually perform a marriage ceremony for them, but too many people lack common sense and too many people are attention seekers.

I agree Zone. In addition, many Christians must see to believe that what the Bible prophesied shall come to pass in the "End Times" is presently being fulfilled. Hopefully, the CC forum will increase its audience as a witnessing tool for truth and continue to serve as a "wake-up call" for a sleeping church.

Your comments remind me of Jesus when he stated that the Gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church. I believe that what we are witnessing is an attempt by these "Gates of Hell" to do just the opposite.

What religion? Judaism? Moslem? Hindu? Buddhist (Which is older than Christianity)?

What makes you think a tribal/social coupling is religious? Religion has a lot to say about marriage ethics, but marriage happened before religion.

Even if you take some sort of weird literal Christian take on it, where is the marriage process described in detail in the bible, other than throw away lines?

Don't ever think, we are compromising our beliefs, only true christian churches are accepted by God, the rest are damned. Those homo's are for sure married, they have joined their flesh and souls to eternal damnation. If you belong to a denomination like that, leave it, it isn't of God.
