Mini sermon on the scene of Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane. 3 Points, 1. How we are, 2. How Jesus is, 3. What we should be like. Passage can be found in Mark 12:32-42 (Also read Matthew 26:36-46):
The Prayer in the Garden
32 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40 And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.
41 Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”(NKJV)
My 3 main points.
1. How we are. Lame, tired and weary. So many times like the disciples we drop the ball and simple can't follow a simple task/instruction from the Lord, in which for the disciples was Just to watch! How many times do we just pass over a friend, family member, stranger, or enemy in their time of need?
2. How Jesus is. Clearly the humanity of Jesus comes through as He expresses His disappointment to His disciples. Two times Jesus says, "What? you could not say up and watch for 1 one hour?" Was that too much for Jesus to ask? Clearly Jesus here expresses His frustration in the moment of His agony here.
3. What we should be like: If we are to be like Jesus, then we can certainly express our frustration to others in love and gentleness, without making the situation worst, but it does take skill and tackfulness (if we lack it then maybe we should be quite until we learn how handle our tongue). In spite of Jesus frustration (point 2) Jesus did not condemn or through out insults, but simply says again to watch and pray, least you fall into temptation, and then what? Jesus went and died for them!!! He could have said, "forget you guys, you aren't worth dying for!, you can't obey a simple task or command" but he didn't, He went ahead anyone with God's plan and suffered greatly and died for us.
Thus we shouldn't abandon those who hurt us, because we are all in the same boat, lame, tired and weary. We should watch and pray for opportunities to administer to others. When our friends let us down we can express our disappoint but be willing to suffer the emotional pain, be ready to forgive and love, and be willingly to die for our brothers and sisters.
