So as I said in my previous post everything in this font I took from my notes.

7) "We need to fear God. 'Fear of God gave me respect'"
What do you think of this? I interpreted it like this, "We should do what God says because we are afraid of being punished." I don't think that's exactly what God wants. Is it?

8) Following Christ means to deny ourselves and our feelings.
*We don't have to be robotic

I can see this...kinda. I understand that following Christ means denying yourself and your feelings sometimes. However other times won't you WANT to follow Christ? Won't you FEEL like following Him? Also I don't understand how this wouldn't make us robotic. ICOC really drilled in the fact that feelings were bad and unfortunately for me I had a lot of them.

I think I still believe a lot of the lies told to me there...and I want to get this straightened out...thus this thread. I also have believed lies not only about God but about myself. I felt like I was bad for feeling and being angry at the people who abused me. I thought I wasn't doing good enough for God and I though He was always angry at me and that he wanted to make my life miserable. I don't want to believe these lies anymore so any responses will help either in this thread or in the previous one. Thanks!

9) We need to give up everything to follow Him.
Yeah...but we also gain a lot...like love and freedom so why dwell on what we give up? What do you think?

10) 2 Corinthians 7:8
Worldly sorrow: "Oh woe is me! I'm terrible!" (Focus on self)
Godly Sorrow: Makes God sad. Sees perspective. (humility)

I understand this concept however I don't like how it was used in ICOC. When I was in tears after they had me write out my sins, went through the medical account of Jesus and told me that my sins put him on the cross I cried and their response was, "You're feeling worldly sorrow right now. You should feel godly sorrow." Is that really how you should use it? I guess I'm confused because I feel like when something horrific happens to you like abuse you really can't help but feel...pain...I wouldn't classify it as worldly sorrow but I would classify it as hurt. I think when I cried because of what happened it was not due to abuse but I was hurt. I felt bad. I felt like I hurt God and messed up so bad that he could never love me. I don't know what you could classify that as but I don't think it was worldly sorrow. What do you think? Like I said, when we sin I think this wonderful. When we sin we should not take on a woe-is-me attitude. We need to be like "I messed up and I'm sorry and I regret it. But I plan to do better. I want to do better for you God because I love you." I hope that makes sense.

11) Godly perspective- This hurts but in the end it's going to be ok because God loves me or that hurt but good came from it, thanks to God. Praise Jesus.
Worldly perspective- I hate what happened! Nothing good came! Pity me!

This I do and don't understand. I think as humans we have emotions and we need to express those in a healthy manner. This includes acknowledging that they are there. If you are angry be like, " Father God, I'm angry at this person because they did this. It hurts a lot and I don't know what to do. Please help." Then you go and process your emotions however you do that best. Write, play music, draw, whatever you need to do. And be in constant prayer. I also feel like it's ok to say "I hate what happened. What happened was not ok. God, please show me the good in this because right now I can't see it. I'm just mad." What do you think? I feel like this is like "ok no emotions allowed for you! Have a nice day!" I think you can eventually get to a Godly perspective but that takes time, prayer and processing of EMOTIONS.

That's all I can find for now.

Thanks for reading! :-)

7 - Proverbs 9:10 Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.

8 - Following Christ is a decision, not a feeling. Faith often requires us to be absent of what we feel and trust against our feelings. So following guidance of the bible negates the need for feelings. Not that feelings are bad, but they often lead us in the wrong direction.

9 - It's not about dwelling on it, it's about getting that message across. That you hear it frequently is because it's meant for people who don't already know, or people who have gotten off track or forgotten, not as something you have to dwell on.

10 - I don't know what ICOC is, but it's not uncommon for people to misuse a Godly concept in a way not intended by God. It's a conflict as well. We're going to force you to remember all the bad you've done, show you how your sins have caused the torture and death of another, but then say you're being worldly when you get upset because you're being upset 'the wrong way'. This sounds more manipulative than Godly.

11 - Read the Psalms and other OT books. There is plenty of 'now this just sucks!', but they come to the conclusion that God is there for them and delivers them. Note that it is common to have that initial reaction. But it's always good to do your best to remember, or be reminded, that ultimately God is in control.

In English, fear can mean fright or respect or both. If we do not have a relationship with God; we do well to be afraid.
If we believe God is wiser we can respect His wisdom. If we believe He loves us and seeks our welfare we have no cause for fright. Even His correction is in our best interest. Perfect love casts out all fear! (certainly not respect).

I believe that denying ourselves is about putting God's Word above our own thoughts and His will above our own desires. We have feelings only because God gave us emotions. There is no need to deny them! They are good! We must not put them above God's word in importance!

9) We need to give up everything to follow Him.
Yeah...but we also gain a lot...like love and freedom so why dwell on what we give up? What do you think?

We should indeed be ready to give up anything God asks of us; but God says that He desires that our joy be full.

This passage speaks of sorrowing over sin. Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say rejoice! [even while sorrowing over sin]

God bless you, child. Unfortunate circumstances have made you wise beyond your years. Your wisdom is shown by the fact that you turn to your heavenly Father. Keep trusting Him, He loves you dearly

7. Fearing God isn't like that. It's knowing that He has the authority over everything (that He's in control) , reverence toward Him ( knowing that He is God, that He is holy)

8. Deny yourself and dying isn't something that many ever really feel like doing. You must decided or have made up your mind to follow Christ. I think it's naturally to have feelings fighting you as well as helping you. I think love is the main one, loving to do this or that and having to give it up. Or loving Jesus and willingly letting go. I think the lesson should not had focused on feelings but the heart, trusting in the heart is a bad thing.

9. Because we don't give up everything I think it's very important to talk about it. Like God has our future and we can heal from our past so give up the past pains and regrets and troubles. But how many actually give it up. In all honesty, not me. we give god the easy things and tend to hold on to the hard ones

10. God meets us in our brokenness. It's when our pain becomes self-pity is when we start walking into the wrong area. I think they should not associated sorrow as worldly sorrow. Sorrow can lead to God or to destruction as always we must chose

11. Again they really need to draw a line between self-pity and hurt. If they really feel this way, Psalms would be a pain to read

you confuse me with #8. I understand that a lot of times denying ourselves is hard and it won't be fun but I dunno...for me there's a part that really wants to give up stuff for God. I know I'm not perfect but I don't understand not wanting to give up stuff for him. I mean I do and I don't. When it comes to stuff like anger that's easy because I'm not like "oh no I'm angry I MUST GET RID OF THIS NOW BECAUSE I LOVE JESUS!!" no, I rationally think about why I am angry and what made me angry then I begin to process the anger and hurt. I don't just sit there letting it fester. I process the anger and hurt because it's healthy and I don't want to hold on to it and in order for me to completely 100% let it go I need to process it. God helps with all this and it works.

I think people need to stop being so afraid of their feelings and realize that they are a part of life and are meant to be processed in a godly manner.

I think it kind of goes with my answer on #9. It's where something's are easy to give up and others aren't, that's what can make deny ourselves hard.

I think it's ok to have emotions (not me!), I agree totally.

Not sure what you want me to clear up here

When you feel angry do you need to do away with it right then and there for it to not be a sin?
