I just got back from a weekend of helping people. The church flew us to Reynosa, a small Mexicican boarder town, that has a lot of drug problems and few believer of faith it seems, but then I don't live there so I shouldn't talk. We went down to hold church prayers and help some of the people move or fix there homes. I had a great time doing it. I can feel GOD in my life pulling me to help others and not focus on myself. The problem is I feel guilty now that I am back. I wanted a small trip to see if it was for me and on the plane back I said yes it was. But now that I am home I find that I feel guilty for everything I have and they don't. Some examples: hot water, deodorant, freedom to walk down street, dinner and so forth. Does anyone else feel this when they get home from missionary work? I am new to this and I will be doing this again maybe next month, but should I go for longer and farther away? Would that stop me feeling guilty or am I just thinking to much on this? Please help because I did love it.

You should ask the Lord in prayer if it is in His will that you should pursue missionary work , and if yes then for how long and also to take your guilt away so that you have your peace of mind intact. Only He can guide you in the right direction. :)

Philippians 4:6-7

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ.

Love in Christ

I can definately relate to what you are going through. I spent a few weeks doing Mission work in an orphanage with abandoned children in the poor streets of Peru. They had so very little and it was a huge culture shock for me when I came back here to the States. I quickly realized that I was living a life of luxury here compared to all those children and all the people living in poverty. Due to money issues, I had never really been into the internet or cell phones, so I was a teen that was somewhat out-of-touch with America's technology and had felt that I was a little poor. But when I got down to Peru, I realized that this was as far from the truth as I could get! The poverty there stunned me and I have yet to get over the guilt I feel when I use the hot, drinkable tap water, or clean bathrooms, good food, etc.
I don't think that you going farther away for a longer period of time will help you get over that guilt, but this might help. I had spoken to my pastor shortly after returning and he told me that we can't help where we are born. God put us where we are for a reason, and that reason might just be to devote our life to helping those in need.. We always need more missionaries!

Most middle class Americans are forced to come to grips with our own materialism after visiting a third world situation on a mission trip. This is where we get to inventory the difference between wants and needs. We can more readily discern our luxuries. This should cause one to pursue more simplicity in order to free up time and resources for the kingdom.

One thing a person might do is save for what one wants instead of buying on credit. And... as you set some money aside take 10 percent each time and put in a personal benevolence or missions fund that you can use to help others.
