Is listening to music that doesn't praise God a bad thing? Even if it has a little cursing? Its not me who is saying it right? It helps me pump up for the sports i play as well. Any advice?

I agree; music that goes against God can effect your feelings about God. What kind of music do you listen to? There is a lot of awesome Christian music out there that has the same vibe but glorifies God.
 
I listen to secular metal and I don't find anything wrong about doing so. I do find it hard to believe, that it could affect my relationship with God.
 
A couple of the most beatiful songs I have heard in recent times, more so lyricly than rythem, also I personally love the rythem myself also (to each their own ) would be NIN God Given and U2"s Sexy Boots. Many types of people and tastes,Many types of music, GOD PROVIDES FOR ALL!

I think when it comes to music it is a matter of personal taste...just as long as we are not trying to live the words in the music. I did that when I was younger, was into heavy metal and hard rock and all my friends were too. We were all about fast cars, watching illegal street races, loud music, checking out girls, etc.. That was waaaaaay before I found Jesus.

As long as u are just listening to it and not trying to live it out I think its ok.

And IMO, liking Highway to Hell just means u have good taste in classic rock! :D

Just chill bro, i think we can get a bit religious in this topic.... It varies depending on the person what they should listen too. The christian music has been pathetic as a whole when it come to producing music, especially when trying to compare or compete with the world - yeah theres great stuff out there but when we lose our religion and glorify His name in power we will put the world to shame. Obviously antichrist lyrics and demonic stuffis not something that will benifit us, just use wisdom and love God. I worship Him to metallica and hillsong haha.

One major point with this topic is its about what we come into AGREEMENT with, agreeing with the spoken word is powerful in the positive and the negative.

From my personal experience dude, make sure that the majority of the music you hear is Christian because in the end, whether you pay attention to the lyrics or not, you are subconsciously picking them up and if all you hear day in and day out are non-Godly messages then this will effect your spiritual side also.
That's not to say you can't enjoy secular music, just be sure that Godly messages take the majority of your time.

I do think there should be some kind of line. Hollywood Undead, is definitely not something to listen to.

I'm not advocating puritanism though. I enjoy classic rock and older country, that is almost always secular.

Nothing wrong at all, you don't have to draw the line quite so close as plenty of music is life affiriming and positive even though it is secualr, don't get caught up in the crazy idea that if it's not for God it's somehow against God, that isn't right and there is much in the secualr world of music and other things that can be appreciated by christians, would you limit yourslef to just christian movies? no of course not, you're just careful what you choose to watch and the same goes for music.

As for cursing in songs I am against it as a general rule as I've never heard a song yet that was improved for having a swear word in the lyrics, for me it just never works no matter what the aim.

But songs can be appreciated on many levels and if it's more the beat and tempo that helps you to pump up then I suppose you can just ignore the swears, although ideally I'd say try and avoid it and find some songs in the same genre without explicit lyrics as you shouldn't embrace foul language in any context, and if you are hearing swears in music it's going into your mind and you never know you might find it slipping into your conversations, I'd stay away from that.
 
I think you'll find, as I did, that as you grow in age and with Christ, you won't enjoy the music as much. I used to love metal and hard rock and hardcore punk and other stuff like that.... but after converting (and aging) it stopped appealing to me. And it stopped speaking to me on a level that I feel music should.

I'd be lying if I said that I NEVER listened to those genres, but it is very rare.

Well said, Matthew. I still listen to a lot of secular music; just none (or very little) that have messages that are antagonistic to the Christian faith, to theology, etc. I'm a huge fan of rap and hip-hop... One of my favourite hip-hop artists is K'naan, a Somali-Canadian Muslim rapper.
 
I think that it's ok unless you find yourself using this words or taking on the negative feeling of the music (if it is negative)....because you are a representative of God to others at all times. Non-Christians will pay close attention to see if you're at all different from them. Because if there's no difference, then what is there to draw them into God?

I used to love the band Green Day, but I started singing the cuss words on accident. It creapt into my vocab and I knew I had to make a change. So, i prayed that God would help me and suddenly, my taste in music changed. God totally changed what kind of music I liked and I found that that music held so much more meaning.

Now, I listen to alternative Christian rock. So, it's not like I started listening to boring music, but the bands I like now don't have cuss words or bad messages.

I think if you feel convicted by music that doesn't glorify God then Don't listen to it. It's all about your own personal convictions.
 
I personally do not listen to secular music much. I have replaced it with all good christian bands. If you like heavy metal try "Becoming The Archetype" "For Today" "A Plea For Purging". If you would like more, just site message me and I could help you out on more bands.
 
If ur finding it bad, don't listen to it then ..
Coz it may get bad when u start living out the lyrics in them, since u said they have cussing, etc .
And by no means that glorifies God :)
There are tons of christian rap/hip hop and trance out there that can get u pretty pumped up for ur sports, etc

Hey man. I like to pump myself up before I box, and worried about the lyrics I was humming and singing along with in my head. I used to listen to a lot of Kid Rock and Puddle of Mud, since for some reason, those seemed to work out. I switched to netutral and Christian stuff a while back though, and though I do miss the old stuff sometimes, the stuff I listen to now works out pretty well. Here's some decent albums, most of which you should be able to preview on Amazon if you want. VNV Nation -- Praise the Fallen; Crystal Method -- Legion of Boom. Project 86 has a lot of good stuff as well.
