My daughter is very playful

My eldest daughter will be 8 years old next month. She is good academically and a really lovely girl. You can never be bored around her...But she plays alot! I've tried using gifts to help reduce the rate she plays but she just can't seem to sit or stand still. What do you suggest?
 
She may have ADD. Perhaps get her tested. Or she's a normal 8 year old. Hard to determine with personal and cultural variances.
 
She actually can concentrate on class. I think I'll accept that she is just being a normal 8 year old... just that her younger sister who will be 6 also next month is so calm... is it possible that I might be comparing both girls? I try not to hmm

When I was eight years old, my mom joked that I didn't walk anywhere, I ran! I was always outside: feet bare, hair flying, keeping up with my brothers :). That was the kind of girl I was and to look at me now you'd never know. I can actually look quite sophisticated if I want to :D. I would say your daughter is completely normal, and just loves to play! It gives her a unique and fun personality.

Once again this was me and won't necessarily apply to your daughter, but when I hit the teen years, while I was still very active and to this day I love to run, I was no longer always into playing and I had "evened out" a little, so to speak.

Is there a way you could somehow teach her to work while she plays? My mom was great at finding constructive things to keep me busy with, even if I was always on the move. You don't have to call it "work" just slip some responsibility in there. :).
 
Is she finishing all her tasks/chores/homework?

If there are no other issues, I'd just say she's a normal 8-year-old.
 
Yes, I've also done just that slip in chores and join her too. That way i can guide her. She also does well with or without me. She is just all playful that's all. While in a public seting you need to see her... I'm like "stay calm, sit still"...but generally, you can trust her to give her best.
 
ADD/ADHD is seemingly the go to choice and excuse when children are active. Too often parents and teachers want to get them on medications to control them, and it is saddening.

We have a 7 year old daughter in our ripe old age and she is also very active, always playing. But she is attentive, smart and articulate. To help balance this, we have times for her to sit and read, and she enjoys reading.

Let her be eight years old and play! That's what you're supposed to do at 8, play!

I'm 61 and haven't stopped yet. What's wrong with playing?

You shouldn't worry. I have 3 daughters, all very different. My oldest has always been extremely energetic while her sister, 13 months her junior, is as calm and laid-back as you can get. And their youngest sister is right in the middle. I'm a firm believer that God gives us what we need. The energy level my oldest daughter has will serve her in her career. She just graduated last week from college. She's going to be a teacher in early education. She'll be a natural!

God knows what your sweet girls will be in the future. He's got it planned and purposed for their good.

yep just let the girl be a kid,people told me I had ADHD but considering how laid back I've been in live concerning emotions I'd say when I was young as your little girl that I was just a normal kid wanting to have fun to me it's silly to think otherwise from my stand point,I even took hyperactivity medicine for no reason and learned when to be kinda silly so my uncle took me off the junk eventually because I proved I wasn't overly hyper,too many parents just think too much in my opinion,so a kid runs around being silly and having fun,God blessed them with legs to do so right? so why not let them have their fun is what I say,your girl is a normal 8 year old,if she has already established serious goals of investing in stocks and bonds or a career with a company,then I'd be worried unless it's a lemonade stand she invests in lol!
 
I was also a very playful and active child, I still am very playful and active now too as an adult, though I can put down boundaries for myself when this is necessary. ;) I liked to play a lot until I got into my early teens, then I could still be very active and still enjoy doing certain games or other fun things, but in a different way than how I was during my childhood.

I remember my mother and older sister told me when I was 11 that I was too big for playing with barbiedolls as well as watching kids tvshow, as I still enjoyed doing this at this age. There were others my age who didn't do this anymore.

Being a child is a very precious time of life which doesn't last as long as when becoming an adult, it should be enjoyed! As once you reach adulthood there will be put a lot more responsibilitites over you, as well as worries of life will get to you, and so on. A child is supposed to live a worriless life, not having too many responsibilities put over on them.

Just let her be a child now, and she will gradually change when she grows older. Let her enjoy the time she is given as a child now. :)
 
There is a quote "The serious business of children is play." So she is doing her job. Like Santuzza said, if she is doing all of her homework, chores, and schoolwork and not being obnoxious in public- then no problems. Since you said she has not trouble concentrating at school, she most likely does not have ADHD.

This is true, however there are ways that you can deal with ADHD without medication. Kids who have this are hyperactive and the meds calm them down, so they can function somewhat normal. If you think about what helps give people energy like coffee, caffeinated soda, energy drinks, and other things. Well, with a person who has ADHD it does the total opposite and helps relax them because their brain chemistry is different.

My sister has this and whenever she gets overly stimulated she has a soda and it calms her down a lot and helps her sleep
