Sneaky Snake by Tom T. Hall. I must have been about 3 years old, but I have an old cassette tape that proves I knew that song back to front.

2. What was the hardest song you ever memorized and why do you think it was hard?

Hotel California by The Eagles. I was very young when I memorized this, and it was hard for me because I didn't understand some of the words or the imagery of the lyrics. When I was a young shaver, I had no idea "warm smell of Colitas rising up through the air" meant "it smells like Marijuana".

3. Do you still remember them?

Yes, for Hotel California. Now, it's one of the easiest songs. I used to be able to rattle off the beginning part of Rosetta Stoned by TOOL. Uff-da.

I introduced my granddaughter to Sneaky Snake about a year ago... she makes me play it nearly every time I see her... she loves the song.

It's funny that since this thread showed up, I have been thinking about the songs I just seemed to be crazy about when I was just a little kid - right around the age I am in the picture I have in my profile. I used to like Macho, Macho Man by The Village People, East-Bound and Down by Jerry Reed, the whole soundtrack (on 8-track mind you) of The Spy Who Loved Me, Charley Pride's rendition of Kaw-liga, and Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce.

Memories. Fun.

Oh... there is none? If you who write do not find something wrong w/ the post, then there might not be one... I thought the Carpenters seemed to be 8 yr old=). There have been times i reread posts and realized errors not noticed when posting too fast. I dont mind others pointing out errors if something needs to be corrected or edited.

I write. I don't grammar well. One of the reasons I need help critiquing my writing. I really don't do grammar well.

I loved that song too for a while. (Mark Harmon's character in West Wing died to that song. Tragic moment.) And then I read the words, and got annoyed how wrong the lyrics were.

I have NO IDEA what was the first song I memorized. We had music in our house ALL THE TIME. But I would think it was a song from a musical (my dad loved musicals!). I'm thinking something like "If I Loved You" or "Shall I Tell You What I Think of You." And yes, both of these are still memorized. I have lots of songs memorized!

As a former opera singer, I have memorized some real doozies! But you're probably not very interested in them. The hardest ones I can think of were both in French and very, very fast. But there was another German one that was pretty tricky, too.

Here's what I'm reading in the words:

First the story isn't just wrong; it's something like 50 Shades of Gray with murder involved. Not only did David kill her husband, she enjoyed it enough to tie him to a chair and dominate him enough to take the crown and cut his hair.

Here he's saying not only did he take the name in vain, he doesn't know the name. And it shouldn't matter to you if he does or doesn't. And, God is whatever anyone wants him/her/it to be.

And this lord he stands before is the Lord of Song, not God. It was good enough he "did his best" under nothing but his idea of what best is. He's using hallelujah as a pretty mantra with no glory to any god, just because it feels good on his tongue.

It wasn't a misunderstanding. He was raised Orthodox Jew, so he knew the OT. He was a Zen Buddhist Jew who though Jesus was a universal figure.
