Music was my first love! I grew up in a musical family, we were always singing along with the radio, singing in the car, singing around the campfire, singing with the extended family.

I didn't have a first song, I had many songs. I am blessed with a good memory, memorizing songs was easy - just sing along. It always amazes me to hear a song from the 1960's and I remember every word.

Probably, the more difficult music I memorized was Handel's Messiah, which I sang in twice. And then, I played in a rock band for 7 years, we had 300 songs in our current repertoire. So I sang a lot of music, when I wasn't playing sax or flute or violin!

Then I taught band, no memory required, and then elementary music. Everything from 2 note songs to teach pitch, to complicated folk songs. Maybe, "Froggy Went A-Courtin', was one of the longer and more complicated songs I taught, and even kids in grade 1 would memorize the 10+ verses. I even found the book, it had lovely pictures!

In grade 7, I had an English teacher, and she took the month of Dec. off to teach us Christmas carols. We sang all morning, every day. All the verses, and I have never forgotten them.

This week I was looking for my old KJV in the basement, and I found a bunch of my missing children's music books. I am so delighted! As for my personal favourites, there are too many write them out. Anything from classical to jazz, folk or rock.

Wow! I'm pushing it to think I've memorized ten songs. I'm not sure I've memorized even that many.

And, yeah, one of the things that amazes me about singers is they can remember all the songs they sing. Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Carole King, and Barry Manilow. not only did the "write the songs the whole world sings," ten years later in concert, and they still remember every word to all those songs! Over 50 years for Dylan. How do you do that? Up there with "how can someone fix a heater" in things that amaze me. :eek:

I had to look up half of your references. (I'm stuck in oldies music. So "oldies," I think your grandparents would call it "the oldies." lol) Heart? As in Ann and Nancy Wilson? Dreamboat Annie? Magic Man? That Heart? (My era of olides. lol) Or is there a newer Heart?

Call it sacrilege, but my favorite version of this song is actually NOT Simon and Garfunkel. Horrifying, I know! I really think these guys do a good job, though. When I first heard it I thought it was one guy separately recording both vocal parts, because they sounded so closely interwoven. It is actually in a higher key than the original.
