Since I just started using this site yesterday, I'm still not sure how everything works. I do know that there are people on here that I can talk to, I just need something to talk about. So, here it is: I am a Christian. At least, that's how I see myself. My problem is, that I don't feel like I have a relationship with God. I know he is there, but people always say how they "talk" to God. I don't believe that I've ever really "talked" to Him. How do I start finding my relationship with Him and how do I get to that point where He can "talk/show" me what to do in life. He is the only one I have right now and I know this because I believe in Him. I've always thought that if I always believed in Him, then He would be here no matter what. Now, I just need to know how to start. How do I go about making a relationship with Him that I can understand? How do I really "talk" to Him. Please help, anyone. I need to make this step in my life. Please!

Talking to God is like talking to your friend. Just start talking. Prayer is talking to God, but prayer isn't always a formal thing that requires you to follow steps. Prayer, talking to God, is about praying for others, yourself, but also about having a chat with God. Talking about how you feel about things. It's not just a time to put in our requests for things to go as we hope they will.
Sometimes i pray for myself, or a person. Sometimes i just talk to God as if He were sitting next to me. And as in all conversations listening is a part of it.
How and when God chooses to talk to people varies. My girlfriend, for example, has had many times where she's had visions, dreams heard that 'still small voice' in her spirit and known when it was God. Myself, on the other hand, has not experienced much in my life at all where i can say assuredly 'God told me...'
Usually it's not till after the fact that i realize God had said something. So i just live my life trying to make the obvious right choices when i'm able, and when i'm not sure just pray that God will keep me from making the wrong choice. So who knows how God may choose to guide you can be different.
So pray to God, chat with God, read your bible, worship and just learn about him. Like all relationships, let it come naturally doing the right things you would in any relationship. Don't try to force it or pressure yourself.

Ugly - Thank you so much for helping me with this. I will take all of your advice and try my best to try to start incorporating God into my life!

I'm with Ugly on this one: it's really hard though, to just start talking sometimes. The easiest way is definately to start praying for someone really important to you first, and basically you can picture God right beside you and just talk the little things. About your day, about the stuff you did at school and the things that made you mad. It's okay to feel lost and whenever I do feel that way, I just kind of start talking to him. Like to an old friend. It always helps. And it gets easier after a while. The best thing is when God becomes the one you always turn to when you want to tell someone something!

Hi Courtney,
The others have made good calls. I'd pay attention there.

Something did come to mind from my past that I feel to share just in case it helps.

When I was little there was a big revival movement where we lived. The Holy Spirit did miracles and everyone felt the presence of God, many who had never prophesied or spoke in tongues, did, it was crazy. People were being healed. Crazy stuff was going on.

I was 7 when it all started, and although it was amazing, I've never felt so confused and alone because I could neither hear, nor feel God, even in the midst of Revival.

For years I kept praying to God and feel his holy Spirit, and for years i felt nothing.
It wasn't until I was 26 that I was broken enough to ask for help in our pastors wife - she was a counsellor and knew me well. (wish i'd done it sooner).

You see, when I was little, my parents went through a messy seperation and divorce. The human brain is an amazing pience of Godly engineering, but when we suffer trauma, it can take over to help keep you safe.
Without knowing it I saw what love and trust could do if you let it in, so i decided to look after myself.
I was even pretty good at it. I figured out how to protect myself, and it was to wall off the world so no one could hurt me through betraying my love or trust.

The problem I found out 15 years later was that I had done such a good job I had walled out God, or at least my ability to hear or sense him. He was there the whole time of course, but I couldn't hear or feel him.
When I prayed I finally opened my heart up through prayer and counselling after being closed for so many years and you know what God said to me? "how hard was that?" :) - Since then he's been with me and I've grown more and more in my relationship with him through the word and through loving Him and others.

If none of this has any relevance just ignore. I just felt to share :)

go through your book and find something that applies to your life, but you don't do, go out and do the suggestion with the expectation that it will work like is said
