The British military says an unknown projectile struck a tanker entering the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the latest jolt in a region already on edge over the Houthis’ advance toward the Bab el-Mandeb strait. It landed in the middle of a weekend where Washington nearly opened a new front.
According to 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally called the president after the Houthis fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh, and asked for U.S. military help. Trump responded by directing the Pentagon to 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 — then reversed himself again and called the strike off midday Sunday.
“𝘞𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘶𝘴,” Trump told Fox over the weekend, referring to the Houthis. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Brian Mast backed the restraint, pointing to a defense pact between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey that puts the burden of the fight where it belongs.
Mast made the larger point unmistakable: Iran’s 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 was ever the Strait of Hormuz — and it no longer holds even that. In the last two months alone, Trump has moved 𝟐,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 through the strait after having already destroyed Iran’s Navy, Air Force and nuclear stockpile.
Tehran’s economy is buckling under the weight of it — gasoline subsidies gone, government workers unpaid, currency in freefall. A president who can order a strike and call it off within a day, over a strait Iran no longer controls, isn’t showing weakness. He’s showing he doesn’t need to fire a single round.
