Many are now wondering how deep the investigations go, what else Podesta recorded while wearing the wire, and are questioning if the current federal investigations into Newsom and his wife Jennifer, were sparked by information gathered from the wire taps.
The initial investigation focused on $225,000 siphoned from a dormant campaign account tied to former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra.
Federal prosecutors say the money was routed through shell companies and disguised as consulting payments benefiting Becerra’s former Chief of Staff, Sean McCluskie.

A $15,000 Chanel handbag and earrings,
A $5,000 Fendi set,
A chartered jet,
A nearly $170,000 birthday trip to Mexico with luxury hotel stays and activities,
An $11,000 yacht rental, and
A $7,000 Gucci bag and wallet.
Williamson initially pleaded not guilty but later entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, filing a false tax return, and making false statements to the FBI.
Alexis Podesta:
Sacramento political consultant and lobbyist who previously served as secretary of the Business, under Governors Jerry Brown and Newsom.
Newsom appointed her in 2020 to the board of the State Compensation Insurance Fund, where she earned $61,000–$70,000 annually.
She inherited Williamson’s client portfolio in late 2022 when Williamson joined Newsom’s staff.
Podesta’s firm received about $180,000 in mostly $10,000 monthly increments from the dormant “Becerra for Superintendent of Public Instruction 2030” committee in 2023–2024, then passed the funds onward.
She was named as an unindicted co-conspirator but has not been charged.
Her attorney, Bill Portanova, said she did not know the payments were fraudulent, immediately stopped them once advised they were improper, and has fully cooperated with investigators.

He received the funneled funds for personal use disguised as payments to his stay-at-home spouse for consulting work she never performed.
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy counts and is cooperating.

He sais the accusations were “a gut punch,” denied knowledge of the scheme, and said he voluntarily cooperated with the Justice Department.
According to Williamson’s attorney, McGregor Scott, Podesta wore the FBI wire and recorded conversations with Williamson after she started cooperating with investigators.
“Alexis wore a wire, and Dana did not.”
The recordings happened while Williamson was a powerful figure in Newsom's administration.
