The new covenant is for new covenant believers/saints/ sons... Check out just a few of the differences;

OC failed because the condition was our imperfect obedience...NC is solidly founded on Jesus PERFECT obedience UNTO DEATH

OC said they were blessed if they did good.....NC says we are blessed because JESUS IS GOOD

OC says when you do bad you will be punished.......NC says that because of Jesus we are forever unpunishable!!

Many Christians will see the word "unpunishable" and flags will go waaay up. But the major distinction must be made...as "sons" our relationship has changed from being outside the family to being INSIDE the family.

From being punished to being disciplined for our own good. Discipline is about training.... punishment is about paying a penalty.

God is now for us so who can be against us? Amen! God is on our side because Jesus has made us on God's side forever!

WELCOME TO THE NEW COVENANT. :)

yep, the key is dicipline, a Muslim guy say, Christian has low moral standard, as long as believe that Jesus is God, save, no matter what you do, rob the bank, kill rape etc.

they misunderstood that salvation by faith mean free to kill. Faith will produce Christ like moral, because of dicipine or guidance from the Holy Spirit. Faith give ability to love other, not rape or kill other. Without faith, impossible to obey the law.

I think it's an interesting question the OP has raised regarding the Old Covenant.

The question is, has the mosaic covenant been cancelled by the new covenant?
Or is the new covenant a separate, distinct covenant with its own promises that relate to the mosaic covenant?

Well if we tackle the premise of the first question; scripture uses the words "disannual", "annaul", "dissolved" or "cancel" when speaking about covenants (depending on your English version). But the Hebrew word used is "kuppar" (a version a "kaphar") and means "to cover over" or "to make propitiation". And the only time it's used is in relation to the covenant of death in Isaiah 28:18. It's Greek counterpart is "akyroi", used in Galatians 3:17 and means "to cancel" or "to make of none effect".

These are two different concepts we're dealing with concerning covenants:

Kuppar (Heb.) = To cover

Akyroi (Grk.) = To cancel

Which is the correct meaning? Can a covenant be cancelled or can a covenant only be covered/layered over (presumably by another covenant)? Well if we read Galatians 3, Paul gives an example of a human covenant to explain the concept about Yah's covenants:

Galatians 3:15
Brothers, let me put this in human terms. Even a human covenant, once it is ratified, cannot be canceled or amended.

Scripture says just like even human covenants can't be cancelled once ratified/confirmed, so Yah's covenants can't be cancelled either. So the proper translation of Kuppar in Isaiah 28:18 is "your covenant with death shall be covered over". This means all covenants remain active once confirmed. Paul even explains this point further in relation to the Abrahamic covenant not being revoked by the law (of sacrifices) that was given because of Israel's transgression.

Galatians 3:17
What I mean is this: The Law that came four hundred thirty years later does not revoke the covenant previously established by God, so as to cancel the promise.

So if human covenants can't be cancelled, and if the Abrahamic covenant can't be cancelled or revoked, then neither can any other covenant Yah has entered into be cancelled when confirmed. This means the mosaic covenant can't be cancelled or revoked either. But is there proof of this? Yes I think so. Note the following examples from scripture:

1) The most obvious example is found in the same chapter of Galatians 3 in verse 10. If the mosaic covenant was cancelled by the new covenant then why are there curses on anyone who now performs the sacrificial works of the law, but who doesn't perform all the rest that's written in the book of the law? The curses are specifically from the mosaic covenant right?

2) Another example is when Israel rejected Christ, he said in Matthew 24 and Luke 21:20-24 that the time of punishment (i.e. days of vengeance) would begin in fulfillment of all that was written in the scriptures. This is directly referring to Deuteronomy 28 and its curses for not obeying Yah (starting at verse 15). If the mosaic covenant was cancelled by the new covenant then why do the punishments of Deuteronomy fall on Israel for disobedience, years after Christ ascended to heaven, starting in 70AD? The new covenant was definitely active at Pentecost (Shavuot).

-----

This is why I encourage us to reconsider the relationship between the mosaic covenant and new covenant, as well as reconsider the idea that the mosaic covenant and the law are the same thing. They must be separated because we know that the curses of the mosaic covenant are still active after the new covenant, but works of the law of sacrifices has passed away.

The New covenant is indeed distinct and separate...

Amongst other issues related to covenants it might well be worthwhile investigating who was party to these various covenants if it is your intention to imply, or demand that any New covenant believer submit himself/herself to the Sinaitic covenant (what you have called the Mosaic covenant).

Another issue to consider is the role of a covenant that has been fulfilled...

Galatians 3 is referring to the New Covenant. Promised to Abraham and Jesus, the Seed not seeds.

If read in context it says that the covenant made on Mount Sinai does not annul the one made with Abraham.

It takes some twisting of scripture to reverse it.

****

15To give a human example, brothers:f even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. 16Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. 17This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.

Beautiful,

That is why The Word Which became Flesh said “Think not that I come to destroy the Law and Prophets, I came no to destroy but to Fulfill” or complete, carry out, put into effect.

Very good post

If the mosaic covenant was cancelled by the new covenant then why do the punishments of Deuteronomy fall on Israel for disobedience, years after Christ ascended to heaven, starting in 70AD?

Because the Old covenant did not fade away until all the prophecy was fulfilled. The old covenant did not end until 70 AD when sacrifices at the Temple were no longer possible.

However there is still punishment for evildoers in the New covenant. Just read Revelation.

Your logic is flawed. Just because God says the Abrahamic covenant is eternal, does not mean all covenants are eternal.

It's the difference between someone adopting a child forever and hiring a man to tend the Garden for a day.

When the covenant at Mount Sinai was establish, Moses predicted its end.

Deut 31
. 16 The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers; and this people will arise and play the harlot with the strange gods of the land, into the midst of which they are going, and will forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 Then My anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them and hide My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will come upon them; so that they will say in that day, ‘Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have come upon us?’ 18 But I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they will do, for they will turn to other gods.

19 “Now therefore, write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it [f]on their lips, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel. 20 For when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and are satisfied and become [g]prosperous, then they will turn to other gods and serve them, and spurn Me and break My covenant. 21 Then it shall come about, when many evils and troubles have come upon them, that this song will testify before them as a witness (for it shall not be forgotten from the [h]lips of their descendants); for I know their intent which they are developing today, before I have brought them into the land which I swore.” 22 So Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the sons of Israel.

Israel broke the Mosaic/Sinaitic Covenant.

Where does it say in the Bible that the Mosiac/Sinaitic covenant is eternal?

Even in secular covenant of one person breaks it, the other person is not obligated to keep it,

The Abrahamic covenant is eternal but they are NOT the same covenant.

I'm sorry but that doesn't follow because nowhere in the new covenant promise are punishments described...at least I haven't found it yet (though I know many times details of a covenant promise can be further articulated in later books and passages). But I explain the reason for my disagreement below.

Deut 31

----To both Ariel and graceNpeace----

I think it would help us if we detailed the covenants for this discussion...

We all know that every covenant that's ratified is sealed by blood, so we can go through scripture and note each time Yah confirmed a covenant with a person (or people) that blood was shed. This means the covenant made with Abraham was not the same covenant made with Israel, and the one made with Israel is not the same as the New Covenant. Of course we all know this, I'm just setting up the following chart...

Abrahamic Covenant (burden on Yah):

- Promise is made to Abraham (Genesis 12)
- Terms/Purpose: To make a great nation & bless the world through his seed
- Condition: Nothing mentioned
- Seal: Abraham kills animals in agreement
- Confirmation: Yah passes between the bloody split parts, putting himself under death penalty if broken (Genesis 15)

Important Considerations (we learn):

- This covenant applies to Abraham's seed
- There was no condition required of Abraham, so he had to have faith
- The burden was/is on Yah to carry out the purpose of this covenant

----

Covenant at Sinai (burden on Israel):

- Promise is made to Israel through Moses (Exodus 19:5-6)
- Terms/Purpose: To make them a kingdom of priests to the world (Melchizedek priesthood)
- Condition: IF Israel obeys Yah's voice
- Seal: Israel agreed 3 days before ever hearing one word or one law from Yah (Exodus 19:8)
- Confirmation: Moses kills animals and covers Israel, putting Israel under death penalty if broken (Exodus 24:8)

Important Considerations (we learn):

- This Covenant was agreed upon before any law was given from Yah to the people
- This Covenant was sealed with blood before Israel broke it 40 days later with golden calf
- Every tribe was purposed to be priests (it's a "Melchizedek priesthood" promise)
- The Levitical law was not yet given when this covenant was sealed and confirmed by blood
- Levites were not chosen as ministers until after the sin of the golden calf, when they sided with Moses

----

New & Everlasting Covenant (burden on Christ):

- Promise is made to Israel & Judah (Jeremiah 31:31)
- Terms/Purpose: To write Yah's laws inside Israel & Judah and to forgive & forget their sins
- Condition: Nothing mentioned
- Seal: Christ explains the cup of the new covenant at last supper (Luke 22:20)
- Confirmation: Christ sheds his blood on Cross, sprinkles his blood on hearts (Heb 10:22)

Important Considerations (we learn):

- This covenant applies to Israel & Judah
- There was no condition required, so one must have faith in Christ
- The burden was/is on Christ to carry out the purpose of this covenant

-----

There's a lot of info we can pull from this chart but for now please note what was specifically purposed in each covenant:

The purpose of the covenant to Abraham was to make him a great nation and to bless the world through his seed. The purpose of the covenant with Israel at Sinai was to make Israel Yah's treasured kingdom of priests IFF they obeyed. And the purpose of the new covenant with Israel was to write Yah's laws inside Israel and forgive their sins.

A few questions to consider...

1) We know that both 1 Peter 2:9 and Revelation 1:6 mention the fulfillment of the purpose to become a kingdom of priests, but which is the only covenant promise that specifically details this purpose? The new covenant promise never mentions this purpose.

2) We know that Israel was punished as late as 70AD and that Paul takes the time to warn believers not to perform works of the law (sacrifices) else they'd be placed under the curse since they can't obey all of that, but which is the only covenant promise that specifically details curses for disobedience? Again, the new covenant promise never mentions any curses for disobedience. In fact, Yah continues to emphasize the purpose of his new covenant promise in Jeremiah 32...

Jeremiah 32:40
And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

Other versions render this as "put a desire in their hearts to worship me so that they never again turn away from me." Notice Yah keeps emphasizing that this new covenant promise is to implant his Holy Spirit inside Israel.

So unless I've missed a section, the new covenant promise never mentions any curses for disobedience (even though I'm not finish searching the scriptures). Nevertheless we know that the Deuteronomy curses and punishments for disobedience are still articulated in letters like Corinthians and Revelation as well as proven historically (as we know one of the punishments for disobedience was Israel's scattering & exile, which continues even today).

----

So there's a unique interplay or relationship between these three covenants that I think we have to consider. The new covenant was a promise to simply (but profoundly) solve Israel's obedience problem in the Mosaic/Sinaitic covenant so that they finally could be the kingdom of priests that the Mosaic/Sinaitic covenant promised them.

Disagree with this premise

- Terms/Purpose: To make them a kingdom of priests to the world (Melchizedek priesthood)

The Levite priesthood was set up at Sinai.
.the Melchizedek was part of the Abrahamic covenant.

The statements before this one I agree with....

- Seal: Israel agreed 3 days before ever hearing one word or one law from Yah (Exodus 19:8)

Disagree with timing and all these premises/ conclusions

- This Covenant was agreed upon before any law was given from Yah to the people
- This Covenant was sealed with blood before Israel broke it 40 days later with golden calf
- Every tribe was purposed to be priests (it's a "Melchizedek priesthood" promise)
- The Levitical law was not yet given when this covenant was sealed and confirmed by blood
- Levites were not chosen as ministers until after the sin of the golden calf, when they sided with Moses

1) We know that both 1 Peter 2:9 and Revelation 1:6 mention the fulfillment of the purpose to become a kingdom of priests, but which is the only covenant promise that specifically details this purpose? The new covenant promise never mentions this purpose.

This is incorrect because you don't understand the New covenant and what it established...which is the priesthood of all believers. It states it in Jeremiah 32.

The purpose of the Old covenant was to show that they could not keep God's laws alone and needed a personal relationship with God, which the New covenant establishes.

I will adopt your format...

Covenant at Sinai (burden on Israel and God):

- Promise is made to Israel through Moses (Exodus 19-23)
3Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the rules.a And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the LORD has spoken we will do.” 4And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. He rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the LORD. 6And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. 7Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” 8And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

- Terms/Purpose: To make them a holy people to be entrusted with the Oractes of God, the prophecies that foretell of the Messiah who will save the world (Levitical priesthood and prophets who hear from God directly...not all people are priests or prophets)
- Condition: IF Israel obeys Yah's voice, blessings...of they disobey, curses and being cast from the land.

- Seal: blood sacrifice Exodus 23
- Confirmation: tablets of stone written by God's own hands

New & Everlasting Covenant (burden on Christ):

- Promise is made to Israel & Judah (Jeremiah 31:31) and entire world (John 3 v 16)
- Terms/Purpose: To write Yah's laws inside the hearts of God's adopted children and to forgive & forget their sins

- Condition: faith of the redeeming blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins, being born again and lead by the Holy Spirit.
- Seal: Christ explains the cup of the new covenant at last supper (Luke 22:20) and His Holy spirit in your heart testifying that you are a child of God and that your bodies are His holy temple.

- Confirmation: Christ sheds his blood on Cross, sprinkles his blood on hearts (Heb 10:22)

Joining the Body of Christ and bearing fruit of the Spirit and spiritual gifts for the building up of God's kingdom.

John 7:38
Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’

Isaiah 55 ►
English Standard Version

1“Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
2Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
3Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
4Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
5Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you.

.
Because the Old covenant did not fade away until all the prophecy was fulfilled. The old covenant did not end until 70 AD when sacrifices at the Temple were no longer possible.

All the Prophesy regarding the Christ has not been fulfilled, even to this day. For people to make the claim that ALL the Prophesy regarding the Christ has been fulfilled by 90AD is simply foolishness. And Jesus was forgiving sins "Apart" from the Levitical Priesthood before He was even murdered, long before 90AD.

Jesus promised two things in the New Covenant. No more animal sacrifices for remission of sins (I will forgive your sins). No more Levite Priests to administer or filter His Word's to His People. (I will write MY LAWS on their hearts)

And here we are today, most all of us have direct access to God's Word without the filter of any human preacher, unless we want one. Just about anyone who lives in the World today can find His Word in a Motel, the internet, book stores, hospitals, etc..

I find this reality fascinating. "For you all shall know me from the least to the greatest". Now if we can just NOT do what the Mainstream teachers did back then.

Rom. 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

If that doesn't make you pause and consider Christ's warnings, what will?

However there is still punishment for evildoers in the New covenant. Just read Revelation.

Your logic is flawed. Just because God says the Abrahamic covenant is eternal, does not mean all covenants are eternal.

Didn't God give Abraham's Children the same instructions He gave Abraham? Wasn't it this Covenant He remembered.

Ex. 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.
24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

Isn't this the covenant what was being broken by reason of bondage? (Deception) Wasn't the Priesthood "ADDED" because of transgression to these instructions that Abraham kept.

Gal. 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Transgression of what? God's Commandments, YES? Transgression of God's Ordinances, YES? Transgression of God's Laws, Yes? So how many God's are there? Only one God, Yes?

Gen. 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 Because that Abraham obeyed my (The only God's) voice, and kept my (The one and only God's) charge, my (The one great and Almighty God's) commandments, my (The one and Only God of Abraham's) statutes, and my (The ONE Mighty God's) laws.

Isn't this the same God that created "ALL THINGS"? Isn't this the Word which became Flesh, that is the SAME yesterday, today and forever? Isn't it the Word's of this God that Last's Forever?

It's the difference between someone adopting a child forever and hiring a man to tend the Garden for a day.

Rom. 11:20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.

Because as it is written: "for there is no respect of persons with God" and as Jesus said:

Matt. 12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother, (Son or daughter).

When the covenant at Mount Sinai was establish, Moses predicted its end.

This is true. Moses knew the Priesthood would come to an end, He also knew God's Covenant with Abraham that He shared with Abrahams children was an eternal covenant, that, as Jesus said, would be here "Till all be fulfilled".

Prophecy is not the same thing as Old Covenant made on Mount Sinai.

The covenant with Abraham is not part of the Old covenant at Sinai either.

Gal. 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Explains that the covenant at Mount Sinai and it's laws was added because of sin until Jesus comes and establishes the New covenant which was promised to Abraham.

2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.

3 Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.

And here we are today, most all of us have direct access to God's Word without the filter of any human preacher, unless we want one. Just about anyone who lives in the World today can find His Word in a Motel, the internet, book stores, hospitals, etc..

That is the root of why we can't seem to communicate...
.you refer to the Word of God as if it can be found motel rooms, internet, etc...implying you think it's the written Bible.

Yes the Bible does have words from God.

However the Word of God is Jesus.

The New Covenant is about having a personal relationship with God,hearing the Holy spirit speaking Our hearts and guiding us as a loving parent.
