My son Emmanuel Carlos is 9 days old and refuses to sleep or eat... He has a small cold but I still am scared because this was his third night home and I just feel like I'm doing something wrong... He eats a little sometimes and I feel like maybe I'm not holding him right or as stupid as this sounds he just doesnt like me... I just needed to vent.. I think I'm more scared now that he's actually here than when I was pregnant..

Honey, he's 9 days old, he doesn't know HOW to not like you. It sounds like you should give your doctor a call and ask about the eating thing- if you're nursing him it could be a number of things causing him to reject eating. In the meantime, before you feed him always make sure his diaper is clean and try to also make sure he's calm- a mad baby is next to impossible to feed.

Also, do you have anyone there to help you? Someone who could sit with him so you can get some rest?

I'm a new mommy too, my son is 7 months and I remember all too well how scary the first few weeks were.

He might just have a sensitive stomach, look up what to do for colic. Wrap him in a warm blanket and try rocking him slowly in your arms. (Sing softly)
It is normal for new moms to worry...I will pray that God gives you insight and understanding on how to compfort him, and may God give this baby peace and rest. In Jesus Name Amen

I have 6 children and believe me, it can be difficult with every new baby... they are all born with a perosnality all their own...

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that You heal the new precious baby born to allofus, You said in Your Word not to worry... By Your Stripes Lord Jesus we are healed. I thank you in advance for the baby's healing. And give the new mom a peace... give her a confidence in what she is doing as a mom is right... and give her help if need be. In Jesus' Name Amen.

You might want to try and change the formula if are feeding formula, but if you are nursing you might want to try a new hold... sometimes how you hold the child while feeding can make all the difference... try using the football hold... and when burping the child, if you hold the child upright and cradle the chin in the palm of your hand and rub the back in a circular motion (this is less of a shock to the baby than the patting of the back)...

I hope this has helped some...

Let me know if the baby is doing better...

Nursing didn't work out for me either-my son was hungry all the stinking time, it seemed, and eventually (within a few weeks) I simply could not keep up :(

Something I tried after I went to bottle feeding though, that really made a difference- putting a pillow in my lap (just a regular one off the bed) and settling the baby on it to feed him. He seemed more comfortable with his whole body supported, and he ate better.

Also maybe if the soap you use to clean the bottle nipples smells very strongly, your baby could be reacting to that (mine did, no matter how well I rinsed them).

Granted, the most obvious thing is exactly what the doctor said to do :)

Really hope you are able to get some rest soon! Hang in there, in a couple of months you won't even remember how sleepless and terrified you are now. :)

Definitely try different formulas. There are certain ones that are for sensitive stomachs etc.

As for sleeping? My son did the same thing. He would NEVER sleep unless I was holding him. I was PETRIFIED that I would drop him, so I never slept. Eventually I began to go crazy from lack of sleep. Until my mom tried something. She laid him on his tummy (I know, I know, the WORST thing to do...) but he slept for 6 hours at a week old. He might not be comfortable, he also could be gassy.

Congrats on the birth of your son Emanuel. I'm a first time mom and my son is now 21mnths. One thing i always remind myself is that 'i'm a great mom'! You should too because as much as other people have "great" opinions on how to raise your kid,..GOD has already given us what we need the most...motherly instincts wrapped in tender loving care. Trust yourself! Consult with your peadiatrician where u get stuck and when you're not sure:-). You have a gorgeous son! I'll pray for you..in Christ's name!! You're a great mom!

Congrats on the little one!

I was terrified of the unknown when I had my daughter! She's 18 months old now, and totally amazing. =)

Is he peeing regularly? That the big thing at his age. Make sure he has AT LEAST 5-6 wet diapers a day. Also, if he keeps this up, I would take him into see the pediatrician. Sounds like he might have some reflux going on, especially if his sleep is affected too! There isn't a such thing as colic anymore, its been recently found out that what use to be "colic" is actually acid reflux which causes a super cranky baby, and a tired mommy!!! My daughter would not sleep flat on her back from day one. It got to the point my arms were sooooo tired from holding her constantly just to get her to sleep for a few hours. I finally got to the point of letting her sleep in her carseat in her crib (the elevation of their head helps keep the acid from coming back into their throat and hurting) and eventually got ordered her a nap-nanny (best money ever spent!!!). The pediatrician wasnt too much help with my daughter, but it was a starting place. I eventually had to take her to a pediatric GI specialist, which put her on prevacid (life saver!!) to help control her acid reflux. Within a few days, she was actually sleeping, eating, and overall so much better! My daughter is almost 19 months old and still on the prevacid. The acid is bad enough to cause her to breath funny at times (stridor) and inflame her larynx (laryngiomalacia), but eventually this will go away as she gets older.

Stick with your mommy instint =)
If you have a gut feeling something isnt right, get it checked out!

oh, another thing on changing formula. Soy based ones are a good starting point to try (no milk protiens in it) but it can cause constipation, and a lot of times babies that are sensitive with milk based formulas are also sensitive to soy formula (MSRI). There are some hyp-allergenic formula's out there, but they tend to be kinda pricy =/

unfort, it is a trial and error to find the right formula for babies. Give a new formula at least a week before changing to another formula!! that way the baby's system can adjust to it properly =)

Thank you onelastwish for the updated info on colic. We live in a very rural area, and the term is still used a lot.
My 2yr old granddaughter suffered from a lot of gas in her intestinal track until she was about 5 months old.
And the doctors and nurses told my daughter is was colic. We used warm blankets from the dryer to wrap her up in.
When she would get into a crying fit. You could feel her tummy rumbling. I think it helped her relax.

Still praying for you and your baby ( Allofus). God Bless

I had a son in my youth before I became a Christian so long ago but my girlfriend gave him up for adoption and the court went along with it (I never signed the paperwork) and I never saw him again. After that my girlfriend ran off with my best friend and I never saw either of them again. Live and learn.

Congratulations on your baby! :)

Congratulations on the new baby!

Shekaniah is right about the feeding it can be very difficult at times when their poor little tummies are getting used to breast milk or formula at such an early age. My wife and I had similar problems with one of our children and she used to breast feed whatever she could then if he was still hungry feed him formula (enfalac or similac it's been a few years can't quite remember) he wouldn't sleep very long if he didn't have a full tummy but eventually it does get better with time. Breast milk is best if you can it gives him all your antibodies and stuff that formula just can't. I always thought of it like breast milk was dinner and formula was the dessert.
Anyways take care and God bless.

Alot of great advise, I just wanted to add one more thought.
Some babies are very sensitive to the iron in the formula.
Are his poops soft or hard, as this can indicate too much iron and he may eed a lower iron formula.
Hard can mean too much iron.
My kids as babies were extreemly sesitive to the iron.
Just another of the many things we learn as mommies. :)
Praying all is better for both of you in Jesus.

hugs and God bless.

First, I want to congratulate you about you're new little baby. :) Well, my mother was like that with my brother Matthew when he was first born. Though she had me before him, she hadn't had a baby in ten years. It was all knew to her but I helped her out. And I think the same things applies to you, it's all knew to you and you're afraid that you're going to mess up or not do a good job. About the eating problem, you can consult your doctor and ask him/her what to do. Screwing up is going to happen, it's just how parenting goes. It sounds like you really care for your baby though if you're worried about him. This is all a knew change for you, and getting used to it is going to take time.
I think you felt more safest when he was in your tummy because no one could hurt him there; he wasn't out yet. But now that he's here, he has more of a risk of getting hurt but that doesn't mean he will get hurt! I'm sure you're doing a good job and, like I stated earlier, you just need time to get used to this big change. I'll keep you and Emmanuel in my prayers. :)

CONGRATS on your newborn BABY!

God is ever watching you and him everyday, 24 hours, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.

You shouldn't go through this alone. Do you have a support group? In Church? If possible, approach your local Church and see if they have any experienced mothers who are willing to connect with you on a regular basis.
