No one can love another when one wasn’t also loved. Goodness that wells from us comes from God. We love because God first loved us. He had loved us with an everlasting love and He had drawn us with His loving-kindness. In the richness of it, we can’t help not loving others also, even the unlovely. Loving is very unusual for our own selfish nature but His nature clothed us in the gentleness of His Son. What was once hard, now tender. What was once rough now smoothed. What was once unbending, now pliable. What was once unloving, now loving.
No one can give unless he was also a recipient. All our generosities are shadows from the ever extravagant God. Bountiful in goodness. Generous in mercy and loving-kindness. God exemplified it by giving us His Son. God gave us the best. By dying on the cross, Jesus gave us His life redeeming us from sin. Giving, in the true sense, is loving. And children of God have giving part of their lives.
No one can comfort another unless he himself was comforted. The God of all comforts leads us through dark corridors, in situation new and very frightening. In silence, we feel abandoned and loneliness creep in ever so slowly and unending. We cry. We mourn. We seek. And from there He meets us. Within those dark, dismal tunnels, we see Him differently. With His nail scarred hands, He leads us gently out from darkness into His light. We see ourselves differently because from where we’ve been, there’s always that change rupturing from inside out. For in breaking, there’s submission. In the emptying, there’s the infilling, the overflowing, the bursting. In weeping, there’s rejoicing. In affliction, distress, and troubles, there’s comfort waiting. So we can comfort others also.
